8" Detroit Tru Trac Front and Rear Interchangable?
« on: Nov 04, 2010, 12:40:11 PM »
Anybody know for sure if a front and rear Tru Trac are interchangable?

I have searched and found some people say they are. They have different part numbers though so something must be different.

I have a rear setup I was going to use in the front when I do my SAS. It seems it will physically fit but the different part numbers make me wonder.

Tried tech support from manufacturer but haven't heard back from them.

they are the same.  79-95 8in. differentials from 4x4's, doesn't matter front or rear, are all the same if it's a 4cyl.  if it's a v6, it will be different.

Yes and NO,  the carrier must be taken apart and the gears (the worm gears) have to be flipped over otherwise the unit wont work properly.

so in the front, does the diff. actually drive on the coast side when going forward?  never really thought about it til now. :dunno: . is that why the true trac has to have the inners swapped around?

Thanks Glen. I'll probably just sell it and stick a locker in.
