For rocks i would have to say the First gen    You can remove the top   and they are lighter    and they come with the 22re

I've seen most all generations do well when set up properly but for me there is only one generation and one year, 1985.

I must say, first generations are the best! When I off-road, I always pull off the hardtop, it creates a good balance.  the few times I have left the top on, it feels real top heavy, and I am sure the 2nd generations would be that way... but I am biased too, my dream was to always have the 1st generation...I have an '89 'runner.

I'll admit I suck at spelling, and I always make type'o's Like that one.   But I have to point this out cause it made me laugh. Its not witch    its which.   For next time. One flies around on a broom and the other is, which ever.  Just for laughs here are two other pet peeves of mine.

I could care less,     no the correct way of saying this is,  I couldn't care less. Other wise you could care less than you do and that's not the point of the phrase.

Your stupid,    its not your, it's you're. As in, you are.

I'm really not trying to be an a $ $. But I had to say it. Sorry.  :willynilly:

And yes the 1st gen. For all of the above reason's.

I'd say after many camping trips in both gen's, the 2nd gen would get my vote. (More room and space to stuff your gear.) With the correct build they are both virtually unstoppable.

Well its kinda a no brainier really!! 1st gen is the way to go. Year 85 cause you will have the 22re for sure and solid axle (biggest plus) and the top comes off like said above! The 22re will run and stay running no matter wat angle you happen to be at upside down.    :yikes: The solid axle, which i cant believe has not been mentioned will save you time and money from doing a SAS and you will have leaf spring in the front. NO IFS up front and NO SAS later down the road. the IFS just can't handle the rock,s or deep snow!  Lifting it will be easy and you can modify the front a little to get a little more greatness out of it. Hy steer falls into the solid axle also and so does the list of other goods wit the solid axle just to name a few! Now the top we all know comes off in the summer for summer wheeling and goes on in the winter for winter wheeling. With the opsion of the top coming off it gets lighter also and tops off is great!   Plus if ya get a 1st gen they come wit the stock roll bar thing in the rear which is siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick..  :shocking: Now were talking for rock crawling right??? HA HA Good luck though on your choice man!

More room in a 2nd gen ??? ??? What? Its the same as a 1st gen. The only reason a 1st gen is better other than a straight axle, because we'd all swap that in, in a heart beat, is the removable top. You get to ditch unnecessary weight.

And beside, the 4 door soccer mom thing just doesn't work for me.

I'm going to say 1st gen as I have had both a 1st and 2nd gen, and spent serious time behind the wheel of my parent's 3rd gen. Luxury and power-wise the 3rd gen would win hands down, but first gen 4runners are always going to be my favorite. I wouldn't hesitate to build several more. The removable top is the icing on the cake too.

1st gen hands down.

IMHO the removable top is one of many factors to why the 1st gen is the best choice.

Second gens are FAT KIDS!  I wheeled with one, and it seemed WAY top heavy compared to my 1st gen.

IMO 1st gen runner, and 3rd gen truck are at the top of my "best Toyota" list.

With the roll cage and top on, you can not carry 5 people and all your gear (beer included) with the room in a 1st gen. Plus the rear seating will hold all the neighbors kids while taking them to the SOCCER games.    :hahaha:

Give me 2nd gen with an axle swap any day over a 1st gen.

I dont think I would ever build a 2nd gen, I think they look cool, but if I cant have a removalbe top then I'd go straight the 3rd gen and had power.
