Steering woes after late model SAS
« on: Oct 21, 2010, 05:15:25 AM »
I have a 2006 4Runner that I SAS'd using a Marlin hydro tapped steering box. The box seems to be working well but I'm getting a little excessive free play in the wheel. I've looked around a little all ready, ...any recommendations on the proper way to adjust it?

I thought it could also be in part due to some of the other steering components but after looking closely, I'm pretty sure all the freeplay is in the box. The hydro ram is working right and the steering ujoints and tierod/draglink heims all seem to be tight.

any help would be appreciated.

Dave

On the top of the box there is a nut with a slotted stud, that would be the adjustment for that. Just make sure to not go too tight or it will mess up the box. In fact you almost just want it snug and then tighten the nut.

ok, I'll recheck that. I tightened it a little before, I hope I didn't over tighten it ...maybe that's why I'm getting the extra play now

Yeah you really don't want to "tighten" it, it is just an adjuster.

I would go in !/4 turn incriments and drive in between to see if you've taken up the slop.
