4runner body swap onto 85 pickup
« on: Oct 12, 2010, 08:54:21 AM »
I have an 85 reg. cab 4x4 pickup.  with a baby on the way, i'm looking at swapping a 4runner body out onto my 85 pickup chassis, or possibly a walk through cab on my truck the way it is.  don't have the time or money to build a 4runner right now, so thats not an option for me.  has anyone done a cab swap before from 4runner to truck?  pics would be great.

Just put a baby car seat attached to the hood. Nothing like the cool breeze to get a baby to sleep.

As for the body swap.  The frame is the right length but most of the body mounts are diff.  Mainly the rear ones.  It would be a hell of a job and not worth it imo.

man you should be able to do it in a weekend
the runner body is really heavy tho so have some buddies
cab mounts are easy to cut off and move
hel! build some if needed
its not rocket science

what do you guys think of a walk through cab instead of a body swap?

I have swapped an '89 4Runner body onto a '94 pickup frame.  Just use the front body mounts for alignment and cut all the 6 rear mounts off the 4Runner and bolt them in place to weld them on.  You will also need the 4Runner gas tank and brackets or a mild body lift to clear the pickup tank...

It's really no big deal if you can cut and weld.

You will need aproximately 2 large pizzas and one case of beer to get the cab moved.

Thanks, yeah tractor paint is where it's at!  The front end was pretty bad, I had to graft another front clip from the firewall forward.  Turned out good though.

I don't have a title for the body because it was from a salvage yard...  We thought we were going to have to do a specialty vehicle title like you would do with a custom scratch built street rod, but after talking it over with a few of my cop buddies I have deciced to just use the title for the vin stamped in the original pickup frame which I still have.  In this case, in my region that is my best, easiest option.  You should probably check with your local authorities on this though because what you can get away with depends alot on your region.

I'm going to be doing a body swap here soon. I have a stardard cab short bed truck. I'm going to convert it to a second gen 4runner. I love my truck but need something with four doors. I would hate to sell it and start over so I'm going to pick up a blow up 4runner with a 3.slow in it and put the body on my truck...

i just swapped a 86 4runner cab on to my 85 standard cab truck and it was real simple, i just moved the middle cab mounts forward untill they lined up and made my own rear mounts, the only thing i have to do is move my rear springs back a couple inches because at full stuff the tires will get into the rear seats with my truck sitting low on 38s other than moving my springs it goes pretty smooth

got a line up on a 86 4runner shell, no wiring, dash, or front seats.  i figured i could swap all my interior and wiring into it.  i swaped my truck from carb to efi years ago, i'm really not looking forward to swapping it all over again.  any suggestions?  should i wait til i can get one complete with the harness?  i hate wiring.

might be worth finding one with the wiring harness still in tact...
