Drive Line Angle
« on: Oct 08, 2010, 10:18:19 AM »
I have a flat belly on my 4runner, 22RE, W56, duals with 4.7's.  The drive train is now flat, to slightly raised in the back.

I read on Pirate that this can make oiling hard for the output bearing on the tcase.  Is this so, and if so, will something like the 30 spline conversion help out (IE bigger bearing)?

I need to replace the output seal and bearing (flange moves just a bit and its noisy), plus the seal is leaking now due to a hard driveshaft hit.  I'm just looking to see if the upgraded bearing will oil easier because it is larger (easier for oil to flow in and out).

I can imagine it will drastically change the oiling if you only raised the case, ie didn't do a realy drivetrain lift.  A lack of oil will be a lack of oil, regardless of bearing type.

I don't buy that.  Running the drivetrain like this is common, and the oiling issue would occur when driving down hill as well.

My thought was if the bearing is bigger, the bottom of the bearing would sit lower in the case, making it easier for the bearing to dip into the oil, and thus oiling up more easily.

I only have movement and a leak due to side loading the case.  I'm just looking at all the options before I rebuild it.

I was also reading that someone thought that Marlin would know if the bearings needed some sort of "weight" of the drivetrain pushing on them or they would make noise.  I am also curious about that, because in that case, the angled driveline would be more important.

Anyone know if that is true?

As for the oiling issue, I would imagine if it has enough oil to reach the check plug it's fine. It's right next to the bearing.
