FJ Cruiser low gear question
« on: Oct 04, 2010, 09:22:52 PM »
Hello, I have 07 FJ Cruiser 6MT, I'm thinking is it possible to add crawl box to existing transfer case? I saw few thread with Tacoma add " Taco Box ".
I don't know what advantage exactly compare to use"lefty" but keep stock transfer-case added crawl box is able to keep center diff. lock and A-track still, but need to make room around gas tank and adjust drive shaft I guess, please tell me little more info about this.

For that application, we can definitely put a gear drive case behind your 6 speed. Unfortunately from there you would have to run either a Lefty or a t-case from a 5 speed Taco or from an auto. There is currently no adapter to go from a gear drive case back to a 6 speed t-case.

The next problem we run into on an FJ Cruiser is the gas tank. The added length of running a crawl box will push the rear case back into the gas tank. We have seen 2 ways to get around this problem while retaining emissions legality. The first consisted of cutting and welding the tank. It's a poly tank so it requires a plastic welding kit. That one as far as I know did not work and had a bunch of leaks. The second way is to heat the tank and re-form it to clear the case.

So it can be done, there are just a few things to work around.

Yes I'm expecting I have to adjust drive shaft and take heat gun to re-shape gas tank for add crawl box, sounds not happy job but I guess it's alright to do, I felt same way before I did body mount chop, feel nothing after I did it.

Once I figure how to make more room for box, just need to figure what's case and box to use try to stay alive center lock and A-track, like you say use Toyota OEM 5 speed transfer-case and add crawl box for 6MT FJ Cruiser able to keep center lock and A-Track?

My boss Jason Demello has a dual case in his FJ.  I believe it was one of the first ones to ever get it installed, but his is the auto

You dont need to relocate the tank and you are able to use that existing case.  I believe a guy in Tennessee has a dual in his FJ with the 6 speed.  Its going to cost you ALOT. Your going to need a new coupler along with an output shaft.
I would suggest swapping out the whole case with one you can switch to 2wd.

yeah I has AT, mine is 6MT, it's seems whole different story compare to AT and MT, but I like the way works, keep oem transfer case so no problem with all function center lock and A-track add 2.28:1 or 4.7:1 crawl box, at least ratio become 100 with 2.28 gear.

I have a crawl box fitted to my 07 hilux...first one in the world done by marlin and wyatt themselves

the FJ transfercase is very similar to the hilux one so there shouldnt be a problem....just a matter of getting the right adaptors.

contact Wyatt at rocksolidtoys, hes done a few now.
