Begin by replacing the seat and socket.
I sell a heavy duty replacement that is much better than stock.

If it still pops out of gear, I would supect a worn mainshaft bearing retainer.
As a result, the mainshaft is moving, and walking the shift collar out of contact with the 3rd gear.
I sell a heavy duty plate to fit that also. It is on my trans page.

Check for supended aluminun in the oil, it could be a worn fork. However, this is not a common failure.

Of course, I would advise a rebuilt trans, but as long as you do not have worn out bearings, the trans could be "patched up".

I have that problem too, in 1st and 3rd.  otherwise, the tranny works fine, no problems at all.  I also have a 3"body lift, so could that be the problem??  The clutch was just replaced last april(?) and I replaced the shifter socket at the same time.

:yesnod: BD to find out if the lift is the problem all you have to do is take the boot off of the shifter put it in 1st or 3rd and see if the shifter is hitting the edge of the hole in the floor if it is you can grind or cut the hole out where it is hitting...trust me I had to do it to my 89 yoda when I installed a 3" body lift.

If its under power, it doesnt do it.  It is only when I pull up to a stop and push in the clutch, then it will drop out, or if I dont hold it while  I give it gas and let out the clutch.  I can cruise without holding them all day, as long as the truck is rolling under power, and not coasting.  I've gotten to the point where I hold it in gear subconsciously :dunno:  :driving:

If it is hitting the body it will do that...when it is under a load it will hold itself in gear. :psss:  when you let off the gas in 3rd to slow down does it also jump out ??? have you pulled the boot off and looked ???
