Cross over steering ?'s
« on: Sep 14, 2010, 02:05:43 PM »

Couple questions: First, Once I was finished I was gonna go for a test drive. As soon as i got out of the garage I noticed I had no power steering. I checked the power steering fluid level in the res and that was OK. Do I need to add more steering gearbox oil? My Haynes calls for API-GL-4 90 weight.

second, I can turn to full lock to the right(pass) but not to the left. I'm assuming I need to reposition my pitman arm on the sector shaft, is this correct?

I don't know about API-GL-4 90 weight! :ack:  I used ATF in mine and it works fine. I don't think you should use gear oil in the power steering box.

 :yikes: :o
get that out of your system asap. hopefully it didn't ruin anything. atf or ps fluid is what you need.

Didn't add any gear oil, just power steering fluid. I just got a little confused by the Haynes man. It calls out power steering fluid or ATF but for the steering gearbox it says use the gear oil.

probably air pockets in the system. crank the wheal from stop to stop maybe 10-15 times. if thar doesnt work, drop the drag link and make sure the piyman arm is centered on the box(full turn to full turn center).

Get some hydraulic oil from like tractor supply and run it instead of ATF or PS fluid.. works way better. it takes ALLOOOOTTT more for cavitation to happen.  But no there is no separate lube in the gear box, What you pour in your rezzi goes into it and lubes it.

http://www.tractorsupply.com/vehicle-maintenance-accessories/vehicle-lubricants-oil/hydraulic-fluids/traveller-reg-universal-tractor-trans-hydraulic-fluid-2-gal--0806383  is what i run in my system but you dont have to run that spesific brand

I always read that to bleed the steering system. You need to get the front end in the air. Tires off the ground. And dont go full lock to lock it puts the steering gear box into an overpressure mode. And doesnt allow for proper bleeding. After turning the wheel slowly back and fourth 15-20 times ( with the res. cap off) pull the coil wire and crank the motor over a few times and check the steering resevoir for bubbles. If there is bubbles, repeat the turning and check again.
(you pull the coil wire so that the truck wont actually start when cranking it over. If it starts youll end up pushing those bubbles back into the system.)
Once the bubbles are gone repalce the coil wire, start the truck let it run for a few minutes. Watch inside the res. for any bubbles.

Got it going. I think the problem was that I filled the res before I started it, and once I started it the fluid started flowing and there wasn't enough PS fluid in the system. :hammer:
Can't beleive how easy it is to turn now. I'll have to look into the hydralic fluid.

Never use PS, use atf.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

i agree, i added power steering fluid and i wasted a brand new pump.  it started leaking after 200 miles.

only use atf in the toyota system

in the FSM the gl-4 is for the steering box gear side of the steering box, not the hydraulic side.
