Toyota Rock Crawler (SOLD!!!)
« on: Sep 14, 2010, 12:17:52 AM »
THIS TRUCK IS NO LONGER FOR SALE.

Soooooooo, the specs are:

It is a 1989 toyota extra cab 4x4. It is still street legal if you are into that. It would need to be smogged. I have removable mud flaps for it. Both taillights are broken and the windshield has a small crack that I covered with a sticker. Obviously street legal not important to me, but doable if that is what you want.

Engine: V6 3.0 engine with 125k miles installed from a 93 4runner. All new clutch parts along with engine job. New timing belt, water pump and fan clutch. Toyota coolant and not a hint of leakage from coolant or oil. Engine mounts have chains to prevent the mounts from breaking. Nice.

T-cases:  Dual cases with the 4.7 gears in both cases, very nice. 23 spline output shaft. All-Pro cross member.

Axles: Front- fully built dana 44, narrowed to 64” wms to wms. Chromoly, cryo hardened shafts, ARB with 5.38 gears, Warn hubs with hub fuses. Gears are almost new along with the ball joints and CTM u-joints. Front axle housing shimmed for better pinion angle.
Rear- Built Dana 60, narrowed to 62” wms to wms. 35 spline chromoly shafts. Adapted for Toyota brake system. Detroit locker with 5.38 gears.

Drive Shafts: Custom built and very thick. Also made to extend long, cause these axles get a lot of drop. Very nice.

Steering: High steer with thick DOM tie rods. Rock Logic Hydro Assist steering. Reinforced steering box. Works great.

Suspension: Front- 44044 waggoneer leafs. Re-inforced F-150 shock mounts
                          Rear- 63” Chevy springs.
Both axles have new 12” bilsteins shocks. Nice

Lift: The truck has 4” or 5” shackles. The springs are worn in and it creates great flex without worrying about rolling over. Also has 3” body lift. Works very nice for the flat belly kit and the tire clearance. Definitely not too high.

Tires: Brand new 39.5x13.5.15 IROKS BIAS PLY.. On 15 inch steelies. No bead locks. 5 trail runs

Bed: Bobbed 11”

Exo Cage: Custom cage built by previous owner, works very well.

On Board Air: Quick Air compressor, with a storage tank. The tank works perfectly, holds air for a weekend.

Winch: Warn 8000lb with synthetic line.

Stereo: Good sound coming from CD player and I-pod hook up. Has subs and door speakers.

Doors: I have both full and half doors. The half doors have cup holders and open from the inside latch. The full doors have not been painted to match the truck and the passenger door is beat pretty good.

Other stuff: Optima red top battery, four 3ft tube neon lights, PIAA rock lights up front. Tons of spare parts.  I also have a brand new flat belly kit from All Pro Off Road that I have not installed yet.

Located in Santa Barbara, CA.
It comes with a 2002 carson 16” trailer(dovetailed) with 7000lb axles and electric brakes. Wheels and tires in great shape.
Asking price is $6000 for crawler with trailer.
I also have a 1995 Ford F350 4door 2x4 Manual Trans, 460ci engine that I use to tow with. I will sell that for $2500
Feel free to email me, Jaya  at underthehood@cox.net

I gotta say, I bought this truck without seeing it first. Drove 9 hours both ways and am so happy I did. This truck flat out works and it works well. There is not one trail in all of Johnson Valley that I would shy away from with this truck. If you think i am asking too much then send me some offers. You won't be dissapointed... :turtle3:

Hey Jaya,

If your Hawaii buyer falls through, let me know.  Interested, esp. if you have title/registration for both crawler and trailer.  As you may remember, I am in AZ, but will continue coming out to SoCal periodically for work.  Hopefully swapping the title wouldn't require too much red-tape.  Would it pass smog?  Without it being street legal (no working taillights) I would have to tow it home with my '03 Taco, which could suck.  Tail lights -- covers are broken, but do they have working wiring/bulbs so I could red tape over them and drive it home?  How does it do on the pavement at hwy speeds?  Shoot me a PM if you'd rather, or e-mail.  More pics are always welcome too.  Thanks.  ~John

John, good to hear from you. I know you have been looking for a while but I figured my rig is a bit to "trail only" orientated for you. If the Hawaii guy falls through I will definitely get a hold of you. It seems like a solid deal though. As for the trailer and truck, I have titles on both and the truck passes smog no problem. The truck does not do well on the freeway, which is why I didn't approach you earlier. I was following your search on TWA and it seemed like you wanted something different. I will keep in touch. Happy trails!!!

Thanks Jaya.  I've had a hard time finding something that's exactly what I want... sort of decided I need to just save up more cash and one day build my dream crawler, so in the mean time, I am looking for something more affordable but still very capable that I can abuse on the hard trails, so I can keep my '03 Taco nice.  I need the new rig to be more capable in the rocks but still streetable enough to get me to the trails legally without towing (since I have no tow rig).  I was thinking your rig is already beat on, well-built, and if it goes down the hwy safely (even if a bit slow due to large tires, small motor, etc) it'd do for me as an interim type rig.  Flopping the D-cab out in Farmington made me realize I need something with a cage that I don't care about the body panels on to wheel for a while.  Maybe in a few years I'll have more cash to build a buggy and buy a nice tow rig and trailer.

I have to ask... are you done with rock crawling for a while or getting something different?  I saw Shane was selling his crawler as well.  Hope you guys are sticking with the sport.  Always a good time wheeling with you.   :beerchug:

The last time Shane and I went out we both came back with a strong sense of missing family and realizing the toll it takes for us to get out there. So for the mean time I am in "stall mode". I definitely am not done and will keep in touch on the sites. I will be at KOH riding the dirt bikes and will probably still join in on some of the events here and there. It is just too fun to be done.....
