22re lack of power?
« on: Sep 10, 2010, 07:07:21 AM »
Hey everyone i just picked up a 86 4runner 4 cheap and am trying to figure out why it is so down on power. its a 5 speed 22re runner with 31 inch Mt's and 410 gears. engine idles kinda rough, lack of power, hesitating, and some times it will buck/jerk. Ive went over all of themain things u would check 4 a problem like this and so far i haven't been able to figure it out. here is a list of things that i have went over and checked
new ngk plugs set to .032
new plug wires, rotor, cap
new fuel filter and air filter
checked fuel psi  29psi hose on reg, 35psi hose off reg.
checked timing and set to 8 degrees btdc
no vacuum leaks
egr system works the way it should
ran a can of sea foam through intake
no codes on computer

Tonite I'm going to check the valve lash and timing marks on the upper cam gear to make sure that it hasn't jumped time or something weird like that.
if everything looked good there i was going to run a compression check and c what that looked like because I'm starting to wonder if it has a burnt valve or some dripping dirty injectors or something. I just wanted to c if anyone  else has had any problems like this and if i am maybe overlooking a common problem of a high milage 22re? this thing has 320,000 miles on it but the guy i bought it off of said that the motor only has 70,000 on it but ive heard that story way to many times and then got burnt in the end . any suggestion's anyone?

300,000 miles is getting on up there,  i would skip right to the compression check.   but thats something you should have checked before you bought it.

I'm gona run the compression check as soon as i get outa work today but for 300 bucks i couldn't pass the thing up even if it does need a motor. i stock pile Toyota parts and have 2 good running RE motors in the garage lol. Or i could just part it out and add to my collection if it needs a motor. I'm just trying to get it running decent for a winter beater

This sounds silly but check it, you said new fuel filter, if you swapped an autozone for napa filter the input and output tubes are opposite. i had a very long problem with my rig, lurching and bucking then eventually would just bogg out and die. i changed everything i could; Distib, valve lash, water in tank, plugs, wires, capnrotor, carb rebuild, new vac lines, pcv valve, etc etc.. finally had a buddy from a dealership look at it and eventually noticed bubbles in my fuel filter, he traced the lines and they were backwards. just try swapping the lines to see if it makes a difference. lesson learned- always check simple stuff first
I blame the automatic transmission for the wussification of America
If Its got tits tires or electronics, your gonna have problems
I drive a jeep cuz toyota doesn't make strollers
