Weld that biotch and never look back.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

I vote spool and tes I have one in the rear and love it. It is not my dailey driver but in the summer I drive it around alot with the top off and you hardly know its there. I have driven it in the rain and never had a problem. If you want to play around you can spin the tires and swing the rearend out but it is fun and easy to control with just the 22re's power. And you are right about the Detroit being a spool if you give it gas it's locked.

I say weld it too.  Cost nothing, easier and quicker in the end.

KYOTA

Put the Detroit in the front and spool or weld the rear         8)

welding is just to ghetto man..yes i know it works, but still.  how about some response from people that have detroits, do they like to unlock?

I have a detroit in the front of my jeep-never unlocks.  A spool in the rear.  My trail toyota is welded front and rear.  I'm putting aussie lockers into my 4runner hoping they are a little more forgiving on the street.   :crossed:

'nother vote for just weld it...I love mine!
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

Well, you asked for the opinion of someone who has a detroit in the rear axle, so here it it.

My detroit works great, has never failed me, and doesn't chirp the tires in parking lots.  It always works when I need it (no leaky seals like an ARB) but sometimes it's on when you want it unlocked.  Gotta be careful in the snow and ice, as the ass end will step out if you give it too much skinny pedal.  All that said, some dude gave me a whole truckload of parts at a garage sale one day and the detroit was in the pile.  (he had an 85 with a stupid 350 in it.  the 3rds he gave me had lockers but stripped out 5.29's  :jawdrop: Score!!)  So mine was free.  IF I had it to do over again, I'd just put a spool in the rear.  Its cheaper and equally reliable.

I've also turned my buddies worn out/stripped out EZ locker into a mini-spool with a little grinding and welding.  Works great!

I have a detriot in the rear and i still am saying you should weld it.  I do like my detriot. But like i said before, cheaper, easier and less time to install it.  My detriot is kinda worn out.  On the passenger side i can spin the rear tire all the way around and around backwards, it doesn't lock.  But when i spin it forwards it locks.  The other sides locks both ways.  Welding the spiders deosn't ware out like a detriot can.  If you weld it right it won't break, a detriot might.  Plus you don't need to use special gear oil because there are no moving parts like a detroit has.     :twocents:

Special gear oil?  I've always just used 80/90 in my rearend....

I run a spool in the rear ( free traded an open third w/5.29's for spooled 5.29 third ) I don't know it is there on the street

Life . . . should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a attractive and well preserved body --- but rather to skid in sideways, cigar in one hand, beer in the other in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming, "WOW - What a ride!"

Hyena

Your suppose to run a gear oil specificatly for a limited slip/ locker.  You don't have too, but i have heard that the locker will last longer.  Dunno.

cgbemis

It was my understanding that the special oil was used in vehicles with clutch type limited slips.

lowgeared

Some oils have friction modifiers for clutch type posi's.  Power locks and trak locks use this type of oil.

You won't here me say this very often, but I have to agree with KYOTA on this one.  I had a Detroit in the rear and it was always chipping tires and when I'd come out of a turn it would re-engage and make all kinds of noise. Now I run an ARB in the back, I love it.  If thats not in your bugit then go with the spool.

I've only had a detroit, so i dunnow what the spool or welding is like, but I have been happy with the detroit in the rear, it only unloads occasionaly, and it only chirps the tires on turns when under power or when turning sharp

I had a Detroit in the rear, shucked all the teeth off one side. Replaced it with a spool after Detroit would not at least offer parts at a reasonable price.

burnyota

I have run detroits in many of trucks throughout the years. Primarly in IH Scouts, with big V-8's and at least 35's. But, since I have been running a yota for 3 years, and a detroit in the rear, lock-rite in the front, I have had no problems. It rains a bit here in Tejas, and with the little 4-pooper and lack of HP like my IH motors have, I dont slide around corners nearly as much, except for when I want to have a little fun around corners. But if u are at a lack of funds, and dont really care about maybe having to fix your welded diff at the most inoppertune time(like on the trail in a crappy situation cause cousin lloyd's brothers uncle welded your spider gears?) go ahead and dump 5 lbs of welding rod into that sucker....other wise cough up the cash for a detroit....and the do unlock, that is the nature of the beast....they have been around a lot longer that you and I have and work for so many applications its nuts, kindsa like my ramblin....and if u live in the wet state of Wa.  your going to have to deal with snow and rain and snow and lots more rain, go with the DETROIT
