« on: Aug 19, 2010, 04:52:25 PM »
Alright Guys I am curious to know if anyone has or is running this?
How does it ride or feel compared to stock?
Don't give me the "TG sucks speel" I want some tried and proven answers.

probably not too many people here running them.   Try Pirate 4x4.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

Well from what i just barely read.... they seem like more hassle for the DD.

Do trunnion bearings go out that often?

Well I was concerned with heavy 36 TSL SX's with ifs width.
But ill take my chances and wait til this is proven more.

Do trunnion bearings go out that often?
Japanese trunion bearings last several years, but cheap immitation trunion bearings will NOT

a couple months ago i was forced to use a TG trunion bearing under the drivers side steering arm, i set preload and drove to town 5 miles.  on the way home i got bad death wobble, i jacked the tire up and sure enough it wiggled (yes the race was seated FIRMLY)  I pulled the knuckle loose and reset preload (took out the thick shim and replaced with 3 thin shims) after a week of driving on the street it was giving me the death wobble AGAIN.

If you are looking to DD it, I wouldn't use it, upgrade to marlins 25mm pin, or get quality bearings and go. Unless you running huge tires, you really don't need to upgrade.

If you are looking for trail only they might be ok. They just look weird and not worth messing with when so many other awesome options are out there.

This thread has been cleaned.

Enough with the trash talk. The OP asked a question about a product. If you have experience or insight, post up. If you have anything else, take it some where else.  :turtle:

even the toyota Japanese bearing will fail with wheel spacers, big off set wheels, hydraulic assist and huge tires.. the chinese stuff is far inferior though.. I like the idea of the kit they have but not going to try them out

I was thinking about getting them but will probably wait until more info comes out about them. They seem like a good idea, but are still relatively new.  :twocents:

I too like the idea but after seeing one in person, a quick look, they don't look like they would hold grease too well. That's my only real concern with them :dunno:

I just installed them and gonna test em out all weekend, so will let ya know how things went on Monday.  Pretty easy to install, I used one shim on the  bottom and the other 4 shims on the top.  Went rollin down the highway 70 mph and no wobbles or anything (just lucky).  I noticed that the steering is just a little stiffer but could have load a little tight.  Well let ya know what I learn come Sunday nite... :beerchug:

Are they polished? I was reading the Pir4x4 and they looked almost rough. I would think atleast need to be polished. It also looks like is has scratched in the finish?

Well the Trunnion Bearing Eliminator Kit works really good, I'm happy with it.  Never had any problems at all, took grease gun with me and beings first time out made sure was full of grease.  The thing thats a little different is that when you turn a little, with the bearings it'll usually come back straight when you let go of the steering wheel when goin down the road.  With out the bearings you have to steer it back to straight and maybe that'll be better as they get broke in a little more.  Only problem I had was I broke 2 of my to knuckle studs, due to driver error though.  But beings the Kit includes the knuckle rebuild kit, and only 200 bucks, I'm happy with it.  Happy Trails  :beerchug:

Why go through all this trouble with the stock axles? Just swap it out for a 60 that has been geared/gone through and be done with it. No more problems.

now i really know nothing about these, but are the bearings really that bad? i know for darn sure toyota spent a lot more money on that axle designing their system than trail-gear did trying to make this product.... i would trust toyota's oem process and research and development a lot more.... maybe that is just me though :scratchhead:

I am with you on that man. I wont criticize someone for trying to make something better though. People just need to look at stuff through their own eyes instead of just going with what is new and hip. Trail Gear has this, where as Marlin has their own upgrade for said bearings. Which is better? I personally have no idea. Which setup would I trust more? Marlins, no questions asked, for reasons I will not get into. (I know this is going against what I am saying but in this situation I feel justified in saying it) What would I do? Scrap the toy axles and work with something bigger.

There is no point trying to make a toy axle strong enough to take the loads that spacers and minimally backspaced wheels put on them when coupled with the large tires that are being ran on them. Toy front axles are marginal in stock form with 33s. Sure you can upgrade them to potentially handle 40s, but at what cost? And at the end of the day it is still a pretty narrow axle. Why not start with a larger axle, say a Dana 60 from a Chevrolet, and built it up? I feel many people would be much happier with their setups going this route if they really (ab)use their toys.

i like the narrowness of the toy axles, maybe that is just me, if i wanted a fullsize rig, i would go with a fullsize rig....

i have seen marlins upgrade, and i do like it, as it improves upon the stock offerings, not redesigns it

i don't like trail-gear because of how they conduct themselves, but at the end of the day, they are a business and want to make $, can't fault them for that.... although i really have no idea what the quality of their stuff is, they do have some products that seem pretty innovative.... i wish i could see some of that innovation coming from marlin though

i plan on eventually having 35s, with toy axles, front widened with spacers, or various other ways to do it, rear ifs axle, under a first gen 4runner, i will have longs and some type of hysteer as well
