picked up a 82 4x4 22r motor that was sitting for awhile, it wouldn't run so I went through the fuel sys. from dropping the tank changing the filter and checked the pump and rebuilt the carb., it now runs but won't idle and i have to keep feathering the gas pedal to keep it running was wondering if maybe the egr or vac. diaphram on the dizzy and was wondering if i can test these instead of changing parts? I also checked all vac lines and look to be good and hooked upright thx for any help also was wondering if anyone in the san diego area can help me diagnose this thx again Mike

I'd be willing to bet it is your idle fuel cut solenoid.  It is super easy to check.  First unplug the carb harness and look at the end.   Looks just like that.  Then just make to wires to plug into the + and the - fuel cut solenoid blades, touch them to the battery you should hear a clicking.  If not then your solenoid is bad, if so then check the body harness.  The + should have power when the key is turned on.

OK ,I'll check it out, let me ask you this, does the the solenoid move at all? I mean acts like a plunger or it just clicks and does it do something internally? thx again

-Jake-

it does move but you won't be able to see it.  It is on the back of the carb on the passenger side by the throttle linkage sort of.

thx Jake, I know which one it is, so I guess it acts like a plunger and moves in and out?

-Jake-

yeah I fiddled with mine this weekend, turns out my truck wouldn't idle either and that was why.  But instead of trying to fix it I gutted it lol.  Idles like a charm now :)

Hey Jake, I put power to it and it clicks, is the tip suppose to move or does it work internally inside the solenoid Mike

desrodunes1

also what did you mean by gutting it? just removed it and put a bolt in there?

If it clicked then its most likely working.  Check the wires that go to it from the truck's harness.  Make sure it is getting power by using a test light on the corresponding + and - terminals.  I just pulled mine out and cut the tip off using some d**es and pulled the little brass rod out.

I think you could just put a little short bolt in there though it looked to be a fine threaded 8mm

sounds good Jake I'll check it I'm going to assume it works since it clicks and trace the the wires thx again Mike

those wires work off a vacuum/electric switch on the fender.

that being said  my son in laws runner,  i cut the plunger off the solenoid like jake did

well I tested with a test light and I got power when the ign. is turned on and the solenoid clicks so I'm assuming this isn't the problem, any other ideas?

figured it out a clogged egr and idles perfect now thx for your help guys
