Hi just to help some of us out. the timing chain on the 22re. Is it a singal row chain?? I want to replace as it is noisey I like 6 grand on the tack. Is there a dual row after market chain some were?? I'd rather spend the money on that. And can some one let everyone (me :)) know what it details. U have the water pump, chain cover, have to have a pully puller for the crank and the cam pulleys. do you have to drop the oil pan??? how much am I missing???? thanks for help guys

LC engineering make a dual row timing set up. For the later model 22r's. The 85 and up are single row. The 84 and earlier are dual row. To change you timing chain and gears you oil pan and head should come off. I'm sure there are guys out there that have changed theirs without pulling the head off but I wouldn't. When you do this it's a good time to change your water pump and oil pump pluss you will be able to clean out your oil sump and pickup. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions please let me know. Oh and when you pull the head off make sure you use a factory toyota head gasket, factory toyota is the only way to go for a 22re head gasket.

I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying I wouldn't recommend it...

because the timing cover has to come all the way off. Unless your head gasket is in really good shape, not to old etc it will most like come apart where the timing cover and the head mate. You could use some black toyota seal but I don't like that idea, Just my two cents.

I had 1 issue....   I had to make a gasket for the area between the head and the top of the timing chain cover.....

With Ultra-Gray, and it's sealed.

You could do it that way. Thing is if I am into a truck that far I would honestly rather just pull the head off and replace the head gasket. If time and money was an issue I would go the other way.
