Engine overheated on the way to work this am. Had it towed home cause I didn't want to deal with it. Radiator & everythjing is less than 10k miles old. Temp went all the way up & when I pulled over I couldn't see any water in the rad. Heater wasn't working so I I knew something was up.  No smell of coolant in the exhaust and no coolant in the oil, I just can't figure out where all the coolant went?? could the t-stst just be stuck shut???

yep its that time of year kiddies,  i have seen motors blow the freeze plugs and seen radiators pop at the seems because the tstat worked and didnt circulate the water and going down the road the rad got cold enough to freeze ,  bad bad boo boo

No, just the normal condensation taht goes away after a while. I was only down about a 1/2 gal of coolant, I ran the engine again a few minutes ago and it's building up huge amounts of pressure in the rad and upper hose. I pulled the plugs and they look ok too so I doubt it's a head gasket, I even unhooked my temp sensor on top of the t-stat housing and the guage just kept rising???

Mine was stuck shut getting hot and I replaced t-stat, all hoses flushed and filled with a 50/50 mix of coolant and now the temp needle sits about a 1/4 the way up from cold - perfect.

ok, t-stat is out, water was on stove and it didn't open till 240*, shut back up at 230*, I think that's it. it was boing over the overflow this morning when I shut it down so maybe I just lost more water than I thought before I stopped? Anyway this makes for good troubleshooting tech. I'll get a new toyota t-stat tomorrow, no more stant :pokinit:! :nonono:

" no more stant :pokinit:"  Stants suck bigtime!!!!  I've lost a motor to a nearly new stant, and had them fail right outa the box.  If you regularly flush your system and keep everything clean you should get tons of use out of a stock toy tstat,   Nate

Ah Yes Grasshopper! it was boiling for a quite a few minutes and I have a very accurate thermometer. i noticed it trying to open about 225 but it was fully open at 240. I'm also up about 3000ft so water boiling temp is a little higher like 218 or so.

While you are at it check here for some good info:

http://4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/index.shtml#Thermostat

There is an ancient TSB on it, for Corollas(?) with the 22re. Same problem on the 4Runners in '85. On my '85 4Runner, I just ripped out the jiggle valve to allow fluid to flow all the time since my local Toyota dealership didn't have the part in stock.
The number Roger shows was still valid when I checked.

Well it's been a few days and I finally got ready to dive into it, right. Put in new toyota t-stat and no change-checked oil again and this time its dirty milk chocolate frothy diarrhea.   Ok-Head Gasket right! NOT! :maddest: Somehow I'm pumping exhaust from the #4 cylinder into the cooling system and presurizing the system something fierce.  I havent got The Head off yet but I cant wait to see the crack that I'm sure is there! :rivers: This was a new ENGNBLDR head back in June, If the engine is shot i'm parting the rig out and bulding up my cruiser :hammerhead:

I've also seen 'em do this when the timing chain guide on the drivers side fails and the chain traintracks the cover.  It'll eat all the way into the coolant passage right behind the waterpump and make a hairline crack.  Sometimes the crankcase pressure is enough to pressurize the cooling system.  If you've got milkshake diarrhea in the oil   :reg: then I'd suspect headgasket and/or timing covere before cracked head.

Good luck!
