IFS V-6 axle info
« on: May 18, 2010, 08:54:41 AM »
So what are the major upgrades on this axle over a mini-truck axle? On the V-6 the pinion bearing size is increased, brakes are better and larger, wider track width.... What else am I missing?

I believe that is about it.

The diff itself is supposed to be a little bit stronger, and the 3" overall width increase is what i believe most people do the swap for.

How much stronger on a 5.29 R&P?..I would imagine the pinion bearings to both be small
Just wondering because I have a mini set-up with 5.29s and a detroit but want the wider track width but dont want to spend $ on a new 3rd if the strength is not increased that much

I cannot comment on how much stronger it is, because i couldn't tell you.

The bearings are a little bigger and i am sure that is part of a strength increase.
With that said, i have broken both v6 and 4cyl diffs so i don't think it matters too much.

I wouldn't hesitate to run the 4cyl diff if you have that already.

I think that is what I am going to do. I will set-up the V-6 3rd with a 5.29 r&p and weld it up for a spare 3rd should I ever need one.

I ran a 4 cyl 3rd in an IFS rearend worked just fine. The V6 thirds has more ribs or fins on it which add a little more strength also.

You will break it with a locker or spool. After years of wheeling mine open I broke a few cv axles, hubs then the spider gears went. I welded it, broke more axles and hubs.  Leave it open.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

I dont think I am worried about exploding a locker..maybe a pinion, and why would you EVER want an open diff?

So it rides nice on the road.

With that said, i would rather have a welded.
Run what you have.  Your running a toyota axle regardless, i doubt the difference in strength is that much of a difference.

If your worried about strength, maybe its time to switch to something stronger.

Not to worried about strength really. And I definatly am not going one ton on my yota. Maybe my scout, but that is way off topic. Thanks for the info

:psss:  web wheeler

ok,  the outer pinion bearing is basically the same as the 4 BUT the inner bearing is enormous compared to the 4 cyl  its deeper (thick) and larger in diameter

you can easily put your 4cyl 3rd in the v6 housing

oh, and the rear housing is bigger diamet tube than the early trucks
