WooHooo  :woohoo: we have rockrails!  Got them in today, took me quite a while by myself.  I think they turned out great.

Sorry, forgot to take pic's before I pulled her back in.

Here is a pic of the beef I added to them in addition to the little triangle braces MC includes....

The Steering stabilizer is also in!  I set it forward a weee bit to much so it will line up perfect when the steering box gets moved forward 1-2".....

We took her on her maiden voyage (to Lowes for primer, can't leave those Rock Rails bare steel! ) and she did great!

 looking good chief! what are the plans for the drive line?
life is hard, but it is harder if your stupid!
Love wheeling in  central washington state, wouldn't have it any other way!

Personally, I would move the front hanger back about a half inch.  If you leave it as is and drill your shackles. IT will only get worse in theory sense your front is stationary. If you follow the arch it makes. By shorting the front shackles I dont see how that is going to help your shackle angle... and yes it would help your pinion angle.
Of course other things to think about. Moving the front hanger back will push the entire axle back by that much. Could cause tire rub inside the fender well. But, it could also help with your tie rod dilemma. And your shackle angle would be better.
just saying if it was me......move the front hanger back some.

YotaNate

I don't get what I did wrong?  Some mount the hanger forward, I actually mounted mine flush!  They say put the shackle tubes in the center of the body mounts, I actualy moved mine forward of center for a suposed BETTER shackle angle and to help prevent them hitting the body mount upon compression!  What gives?

Getting ready to order tires, the 33's look silly!  Beating myself up over what to get, nothing good comes in a 15" wheel anymore and I hate the thought of 17" wheels.  I think I just need to get out of the "old school"  :dunno: mindset and go with the flow.
I know y'all are gonna give me  :haha: for it but I think I am gonna go with a 37X12.50X17 BFG AT.  They work awesome 90% of the time (not so hot in mud) and they last FOREVER!  My rig is the family fun Runner and we use it for road trips and camping so I think it's a wise choice if not the gnarliest looking ( I love MT Claws!!) tire out there.
We also plan on having a lot of fun in the snow and I KNOW the AT's work good there so if you have any suggestions lemme know now before I push the button! :woohoo:

Just my opinion Natedog, If I had ol blue I would go with 35" just  :twocents:
DD, 22R, L52HD, 35"s, All pro/Marlin Hysteer, 529's, Aussie Locker in rear only. 5" All Pro springs and 5" shackles. Just purpose built and dependable. A/C blows like ice too... www.4x4HIM.org

OK so for a little update, Dan (wakkjobb) and I swapped mirrors.  I had the small kind and he had the huge "towing" mirrors.  I'm 6'4" and couldn't see much out of the little ones so I was happy to swap them.  They didn't line up at all when I tried to mount them so I ended up taking the mounting brackets off and swapping them top for bottom on each side.  This allowed me to reuse the existing threaded holes on the top of the door.  Once they were soft mounted on the top I simply lined them up straight and drilled two new holes for the bottom mount.  Lowes supplied the stainless hardware.  They are VERY stout now and I love them.  Pics.....

Small updates :(   Saving up for bigger updates!   :beerchug:

I'm going to be taking your advice (and my savings account's advice :D ) and we'll be going with 35's.  The price difference is just huge!  I'm planning on ordering the KM2's from http://www.ntwonline.com/  they have been GREAT to deal with.  I plan on going with the 2.5" BS black steelies for a more stable stance, any thoughts on that?  I have heard it will wear out my steering quickly and others have told me thats just untrue so, meh  :headscratch: who knows.   :beerchug:

Mine are 4.5" or 4.0" in back spaced with 1.5" wheel spacers. I've seen 2.5" back spaced wheels on built suzukis mostly. I kinda agree with who ever told you the cons about the 2.5" spacing.  I've never had 2.5's, I really like what I have, again  :twocents: , oh, glad your going with the 35's. I know a few guys out there don't like my tires(pro comp a/t 35's) but they do suprisingly well on the trail at 10psi, ride awesome on the road, and best of all, they come with a 50k mileage warranty.

YotaNate

I don't think there is any way 4.5" would work!  The Pro-Comp steelies I had with the 33's were 3.75" and I had about 1/4" clearance between the tire tread and the leaf springs at full lock, correct me if I am confused but a 4.5" BS wheel would cause tire/leaf contact all things the same?  EDIT:  :hammerhead: Just realized that was before the 1.5" spacers so they would probably work.   Anyway I guess I will have to choose between their 3.75" or 2.5" BS.

On another topic Kim and I just were discussing the plight of Old Blue and she wants her on the road ASAP as do I so we just placed an order with  :turtle: for the rear 5" Suspension kit and a new FJ80 MC! :woohoo:   :turtle: said it will be about 3 weeks because they are out of the 5" springs right now.  So we hope to have more updates sooner than later.  :beerchug:

What back spacing are the wheels on the 83? Those look like they would work perfectly with 35"s

Pro Comp 15X8 with 3.75 BS, I sold those 33's that are on the Runner in all the pictures.  It is now on jackstands awaiting new shoes!

HOLY COW !  It's been 3 Years!

I thought I would start a new thread but figured WTH, I like the idea of a continuing story so I'll try to fill in a little before getting to the real reason I have been sifting through threads here for the past 3 days.

To start with here is the "finished" product :)  Commuted every day to work 25 miles each way 60 MPH 2 fingers on the wheel.

richard Cepek 35's Locked F&R as per the build runs great.  187,000 Miles and Change...

So long story short I'm a mile from home last week and i hear and feel an audible POP! and get sprayed in the face with a small amount of what is obviously  Antifreeze, Oh this is going to be a great freaking day...
She made it up the hill and I coasted into the yard with the Temp Gauge reading just under the HOT line but not past the White line into the red mark.  I'm hoping I was safe, it was less than 5 minutes from pop to stop.  I opened the hood and could tell right away where the POP came from, the head gasket must have let go allowing the engine to pump air into the cooling system because it Literaly blew the cap right off the Overflow Reservoir and the hose was yanked out of it's little plastic clips.  I fired it up a few minutes later after adding water and sure enough after a few seconds it was forcing water out the overflow tube like a garden hose.  Fun.

YotaNate

SO,
Like I said I looked up quick and dirty head gasket threads ordered the parts from rock auto and started pulling it appart to get things cleaned up and ready for the new gaskets and you know you gotta go into these things expecting suprises right?  I mean it's like a  remodel on a home, you open up a wall you never know what your gonna find, your wife watches enough Home and Garden to understand right?  less than an hour into it this homely looking piece decides to just crumple under it's own weight....

SO,
I run inside for a drink and look it up on Rock Auto, $232. AHHHH! EGR crap, I got rid of all that on the 82 Carb'd Build with Block Off Plates from LCE.

http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=60787.0   Man that was a fun build !  Gave the truck to my boy, drives it every day to school and the Fire Station!

So... Do I suck it up and pay for the new EGR snorkel dork thingy or fab up two plates?  No inspection here but I'm moving 100% sure next year to CO and they DO have inspection....  I hate Emissions...

OK,
I would just like to say whoever it was that came up with this combination of fastener type and location should be shot.   :censored:

Maybe it's because I'm 6'3" but it took me 2 hours with a SureFire flashlight to find what my intake was dangling by...
That is a terrible design, it doesn't look like it with the upper intake off and the fuel rail removed with the wiring harness disconnected etc. etc. but trust me you cannot see that Allen Fastener if you don't know it's there ahead of time.  :stopit:

This down and dirty head gasket replacement just got a whole lot more involved.  I need a

Door number three looks nice and shiny to me!

Not sure where the gasket failed but it seems obvious to me cylinder 3 had water in it?

Sure looks steam cleaned to me!
