Heck if you want mail me your badges and I'll just do it for you...  Just the clear plastic part not the whole sail panel.

We are headed through your area in about a week and a half.  We are wheeling Compressor on the afternoon of the 30th. We're staying at a campgound on the east end of lake Cour de Alene, or however you spell it on the night of the 30th and headed through Spokane on the 1st.

Got my spare tire carrier made. Cut out the stock crossmember and made a new one with two peices of tubing and a plate.  Put a stock chain hoist tire winch in there and you raise and lower it from the back of the passenger wheel well with a ratchet. Everything fits and nothing hits. This probably deserves a few more photos in the future...

OK so we went all out and worked a couple all nighters to get ready for out vacation trip to the coast and back while wheeling and camping in between.  I originally had the '94 pickup set up with some 3.5" lift chevy 63s with the overloads taken out for a total of 4 leaves in the rear packs. With the additional rear weight of the 4runner the handling was a little loose in back.  I added two thin leaves to the bottom from another stock chevy pack, which did help the handling when moderately loaded, however, when we loaded it up with all our camping gear, food and the entire family it totally sucked.  Borderline dangerous even. We unloaded a bunch of stuff to save weight about 20 miles into our trip. It was still overloaded feeling and really squirmy in the turns and side winds.

After the long trip and getting caught up enough around here I realized that I had a good wheeling set up, but since the vehicle is used for a mix of overland style travel with trails mixed in and that's not going to change, we decided to add some beef to the rear springs.

I ended up adding one more short leaf and a stock overload from a set of 3/4 ton 57" chevy springs.  This lifted the back about 2".  Now I am making some shorter shackles all the way around to drop it back all around about an inch and maybe loose a little yaw in the process.  I had 5.5" shackles up front and 6.5" hole ot hole in the rear and I am trying 3.5" in the front and 4.5" in the rear with some harder fresh poly bushings in the back shackle hangers.

Here is a pic of my new overlander style sping packs, which suprisingly are riding nice and smooth...

I know but they still ride nice.  Go figure. The top 4 have more arch than the entire bottom so I think I'm getting a progressive effect without meaning to...
We took some hard corners on the way to town today and it corners so much better it's crazy.  Drove over an 18" log last night too and we didn't loose any articulation either.  Apparently the 63s flex good no matter what.

I still have your badges!  Work has been relentless and we are fixing up a 4 horse trailor now too.  I'll try to get them done tonight.  I was thinking of doing a write up on it.

with the weight of the 4runners, the 63s do great.

and awesome, progress on my 86 is slow anyways so no rush.

Finally got around to swaping my bent front housing for an '85 housing I had on a beater project that had my gussets and everything on it. This gave me a chance to refresh seals, wipers and repack everything with grease etc.  I went and did the martacks on my axles this time. I left the c-clips out last time and without martacks I had alot of grease migrate into my gear oil since the seals didn't line up ideally on the axles.

I also did a little more tuning on my front springs.  I am using some longer 3rd gen pickup rears that are old many emu springs.  They had one long arch leaf from another rear pack added and still handled a little floppy on the new configuaration. I want everything to get lower and handle better so I took out the long leaf and put then two bottom leaves from some stock front packs under the top three emu leaves.  Then I trimed the emu overload a bit and put it back on the bottom.  Stock front springs have alot more leaf material to the rear of the spring and I think there is an engineering reason for this, probably trying to keep them soft over minor bumps but still have some resistance to body roll and axle wrap I'm guessing. They are flatter, a little lower and a bit stiffer. We'll see how it does.

Yup should be less floppy now.  It's funny, when I set the spring and shackles up when it was still a stripped down '94 pickup we just made short runs to trails in the woods and had little rock crawl competitions and those loose soft springs and long shackles handled and flexed just fine, but now that it's a 4Runner/camping crap/family hauler it needs an entirely different setup. This project has been a real education.

OK so I got to put it on the road a couple hundred miles allready. After everything settled out I succeeded in droping it about 1.5" in the front and about 1.25" in the rear.  The body roll is reduced noticably and it feels better in corners in general.  I only have about 1" of bump stop clearance in the front now.  I have the big 4.5" eurethane bump stops now so I may swap those out for some 3" bump stops in the front and use the 4.5" ones in the back. It rides just fine but you can definately feel it needs a bit more uptravel before it smacks something.

I would still like to add a front swaw bar.  I'm thinking of using one off a cherokee since they are huge and mount in front of the axle and should work well on an SAS setup.  Also I can use some JKS disconnects on those for wheeling. There are a couple cherokees at our local wrecking yard...

Haven't got a chance to load it up or wheel it yet but I suspect it will wheel great and haul better than it did before. It looks a little less tweaky and not as "too tall" now.

I was going to get some 35" Treadwrights if I could get a deal on some 16" wheels but so far nothings come up.  I think I'll just get some 35x12.50 15 bfg all terrains and be done with it.  I need to buy a set of 37" Pit Bulls next year for mud terrain/crawl competition tires but right now I need winter wheeling and DD tires so the bfgs are my most practical option unless I can find some almost free 16s. They work pretty well in most terrain and last forever, not to mention being vastly superior for snow wheeling.

Our chevy is torn apart right now and we had to pick up a pop up camper today so I used the 4Runner. Pulled it about 20 miles at 65 mph.  It didn't even suck, the rig was very stable and everything.  Didn't even slow it down either. I had to whip out a quick drop hitch to do it this morning though...

Got to wheel a mild trail with some speed and a decent load of coolers, firewood and camp chairs this weekend. The new springs didn't sag out at all and cornered great even with the load. We headed up with my buddy's stockish '85 4runner and a super duty ford.

The trail is mainly just 4-8" rocky bumps with a few ruts mixed in with 5 or 6 creek crossings and a climb to a point where you can see most of the adjacent county ahd watch the sun go dowm while cooking dinner.  It took about 1 1/2 hours to get up there keeping pace with the super duty and the stockish '85.  They took a different route on the way out and I took the same way home but I got to go at my own pace this time.

We made it home in 32 minutes in comfort so I am very happy with the new spring set up for fire roading action and overall handling...

Won a local rock crawl event in the 4Runner with the help of my 10 year old son Caleb as my spotter.  He totally gets it and we didn't pick up any penalty points at all. My tires were bald so a buddy let me borrow a set of old school MTRs.

A few weeks later I bought a set of the new MTRs...

Haaa haa!  That's funny.

Well the last 5 years, it wheeled a bit, provided tractor duty, built a house with it, daily driven, the 4runner ended up with the carbed 22r for a couple years, road tripped a bunch, it was the family hauler, wheeled and daily driven some more, then more recently got stripped and sold to ORM and 300K :).  What happens next will be up to those guys.

Well, 300K and I will be building this up. Great honor to have a carcass from H8PVMNT. Wanted 300K to keep the carcass as his DD but he likes the PUs.

SO, I am looking to build a general purpose DD/offroader, not a rock crawler, since I have Old Red already.

3RZ. Probably 33's. Rear auto locker. 4.56 gears. W56. :yikes:.

Have an 85 PU locally presently selling for $850 with a blown 22RE. Was $1000 originally. Will offer $650 in a few months. Will use tranny, axles, and tcase.

Again, a great honor to be rebuilding H8PVMNT's 4runner carcass with my great son, 300K.  :driving:
