Well there's nothing wrong with the redneck build.  I have had my share for sure.  With this one I am just trying to have the end result be a nice new built 4Runner.  Not to big, not to small...  My goal is a truck capable of most decent trails and alot of deep snow but still good for anything from overland/camping to the trip to the grocery store with a few 2,000 mile road trips every now and then.

I plan to build a striped down competition truck next year with what's left of my neighbor's '94 2WD. That one will probably be more redneck :).

Here is a recent engine bay pic. Not done, but you get the idea.

We are coming through your area and plan to wheel Compressor Trail at Mullan the week of the 4th of July.  I think like the 1st or 2nd or something like that. Want to meet us over there and wheel?

We have a fall 4x4 trials competition (basically rock crawling) over in Ft Benton every fall.  If you have a truck going you should come out for it.  A bunch of guys from Missoula come over every year with some pretty nice Toyotas.

After taking out my crusty wheel cylinders I decided to take a look at the logistics of stuffing the spare back underneath.  I know everyone is building swing outs these days and that's cool, but I just wanted a more tight package and better visibility to the rear than a sing out affords.  I run a 35" spare and I wasn't sure it would fit, but after straping it up there and looking at the possible shock mounts and the space under there I think it will work.  I just need to butcher up that cross member and build something else that allows the tire to go up in there higher.  I might make the tire winch crank go in through the side under the fender, or maybe even through a small access panel in the bed floor, I'm not sure yet.

Does anybody know how he accesses his crank/winch thing?  I'd love to see it.  I was thinking today that I should probably go through the bed with a ratchet.

Still can't get fluid to go to the rear brakes.  Very irritating...

I got tire of fighting with the brakes and decided to slap down some satin black on my front bumper and make it look decent again after sitting for 5 years.

try uncapping the rear line at booster & the drum at both ends take the air hose & your hand to make a seal around the line & just blow all the old crap outta there thats what I did before & it fixed my problem. Hope that helps you

The 4Runner that the lines came with sat for un unknwn amount of time.  It was an '89 and pretty clean so I'm guessing 10 years or more.  The line might be petrified shut.

Got the brakes worked out.  I ended up shooting some PB Blaster down the line and pushing it out with compressed air.  It still took like 40 minutes to get the brake fluid to the rear but everything works now.  I made a piece with a tab and some all thread to permanently set the LSVP. and also set up my rear shock mounts with some cut out pieces from some old stock lower shock mounts.  I always wanted to do shock mounts with those since they are so easy and clean.  Shock mounting is 1st gen style and works well around my spare tire up underneath plan.  I'll post more pics later.

Pics of shock mounting, proportioning valve adjuster and a tail light installed...  Got the tails and brake lights working but I'm still having trouble with the '98 turn signals.  From what I can tell, everything has to be hooked up for the flasher to function.

I've never really liked the A style shock mounting because it leaves a little to be desired for higher speeds but with the adjustable shocks that you can make rock hard it shouldn't matter anyway.  You really notice the difference with the Ranchos. This was basically my only option with the spare tire up under there. I used to run both shocks to the rear of the axle and you could make it so stiff it had no body roll whatsoever and you could break the rear end loose super easy.

Tails, turns backup lights and stop lights all work.  The passenger side turn signal on the '98 stuff was on the passenger side of the body harness instead of on the drivers side like the '89.  Took a while but I finally found it.  Now I'm on to the roll up back window.  Needs to be supplied with a 20amp or better fused constant hot.  I think I can use the power door lock circuit from the '98...

My wife helped me do a big push last week so we could take it on the road this weekend and put some miles on it.  I can't get the rear window to roll back down and the wipers work backwords.  I think the '98 wiper realy stuff isn't jiving with the '89 wiper motor.  I guess I'll get a later model wiper motor and try it out.  Interior is still mostly missing and we of course got pulled over for no mud flaps and no rear bumper...

We drove it over to Lincoln, which is about 160 miles from here one way.  I went about 80 mph on the way there in the daytime and got about 17.5 mpg.  I was happy with that since that is typical 22re milage with 35s and 5.29 gears.  You can cruise right up the hills in 5th oor 4th without having to wrap it out.  The biggest difference is the noticable good pull in the 2000-2500 rpm range. I am not tending to rev the crap out of it because of the added power in the lower rpms.  I even was able to easily pass and accelerate while going up hill in 4th.

On the way home at night I kept it at about 65-70 mph and we got 24.5 mpg! I was shocked and amazed at this. I have heard reports of good milage but I just didn't expect to get anything over 20.

Other than that I can't get the cruise working and I finally got a check engine light.  Small wonder with all the wires hanging everywhere and the oil sender wire is still broken at the plug.  I have to tidy things up and get a scan tool on there. I might ditch the cruise control for an aftermarket steering wheel and add a hand throttle... It would save me trying to figure out what to do with the empty hole the airbag is supposed to go in.

While over there I went up a couple little mountain trails for a poser shot or two...

Been really busy with work the last few weeks and we are getting ready for a big wheeling/surfing trip for the week of the 4th.  Tying up all the loose ends on the 4runner...

Since our visit with Buford P Justice we decided we had better give in and make some attempt at tire coverage, especially since the main purpose of the 4runner will be to drive 1,000 miles plus of highway and wheel at various cool locations, camp, then drive home. Getting pulled ove every 120 miles sucks.  Hopefully these lawn edging flares and quick release mud flaps will keep the man off our back. It really goes against my grain to do this but we have caught alot of flack allready.

I also refurbed my 4runner badges and the interior is shaping up nicely. Getting the '98 fuse box to fit was a special challenge.

I sanded the back side with a DA sander and 320 grit, then I used a tiny flat screwdriver and some acetone to get the old paint out of the back side of the lettering, since it is recessed into the back.  Once it was clean I painted the back side with three coats of silver, then sanded off the back again with the DA sander.  Since the letters are recessed they stayed silver.  At that point I just painted the back side with three coats of semi-flat black and let it dry, then cleaned off the overspray on the fronts with more acetone and waxed them a bit.  I used some mastic to re-attach them.  They are not perfect but they look alot better than the nasty ones we all have.
