I know there are a decent amount of people on this forum that know a lot about computers. Every time I go to best buy i always seem to talk to some random customer about some new program i didnt know about before. I figured i would start a thread that we could share some cool programs we have used or heard about. Some may make your lives easier.
Here's mine:
Synergy (Free program):
http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/Run synergy on multiple computers over a wireless network and use only one mouse/keyboard for all of them. This program allows you to drag a mouse from one screen to another and use the same keyboard. The screens do not have to be on the same computer.
The program is old but still works with windows 7/vista.
Rocket Dock:
http://rocketdock.com/Program gives you a dock to add program shortcuts to run similar to what MACs have. This can save you desktop space if you have a laptop.
360Desktop (I think a free program):
http://www.360desktop.com/This program is a cool concept. Instead of just having one set space to work on, picture your desktop as a complete circle and your monitor is only viewing a small square of the circle. This makes your desktop space very large, again good for laptops. Although i never had much use for this program, still a cool concept.
Tight VNC (Free Program):
http://www.tightvnc.com/This program runs on your desktop at home in the background, allowing you to log onto your desktop over any internet connection and control it from that terminal. You can also transfer files from your desktop to another computer.
For best results, setup No-Ip from no-ip.com on your computer so you do not need to remember your IP address if it changes, you just need to remember the server you setup.
You can access your computer from a normal web browser and control it as if you were sitting in from of it through Java. To transfer files you need to run the Tight VNC viewer, available on their website.
Boxee (Free):
http://www.boxee.tv/This Program accesses many video hosting sites (Not those sites you sicko), and play countless episodes of your favorite TV shows, also giving you a single user interface to control Netflix (Play it now), Pandora, and YouTube. it essentially makes your computer a multi media center and TV. Worth checking out.
DvD Video Soft (Free Studio):
http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/free-dvd-video-software.htmThis is a collection of different programs that i have not even fully explored yet. From you tube downloaders, to dvd ripping, to conversion software. Many programs combined into one awesome user interface. Definitely worth a look.
Format Factory (Free):
http://www.formatoz.com/This program will convert almost any format of anything into almost any other format. Audio, Video, and Pictures. Example, convert MP3 files to WMA files, Jpeg to Gif, WMV to AVI, etc. Ever have a video you captured on your phone in a funky .3gp format that you cant do anything with? Well this program can convert it into a usable video file.
This program also contains a dvd to video ripper.
A must have on everyone's system.
AnyDvD (I think its now $35/year):
http://www.slysoft.com/en/This program runs in the background and removes the coding on Copyrighted DvDs. It lets you rip most of your purchased DvDs to your hard drive so you can play them on trips or on a computer without a DvD player.
Skype (Free):
http://www.skype.com/A chat service that allows you to also host audio/voice calls to other skype members. If you pay for the service you can also make phone calls from it as well. Only a cool program if you need a house phone, know others that have the service, or have friends that live out of country and are sick of paying international calling fees.
I have more but let's see what everyone else has found...
Let me know if you have any questions or need help setting up any programs, i will do what i can.
