Big ole tires
« on: Mar 29, 2010, 07:36:40 PM »
Ok, I DID search ;) I am very close to going 39.5 on my junk. Some say "DO IT DO IT". Others, well...not so much. It's got longs.arps ect. Feel free to chime in  Am I asking for trouble?

Why yes, yes it does. I have one friend that I do respect his opinion telling me it's a bad idea. He's sayin that the toy size gear just doesnt have the sack to stand up to 39's. I know alot of guys are running them, but dont know anyone personally who is. Dont really feel like blowin my whole set up to hell but I do want more tire.

im running 37s... with the longs and gussets and air locker. im not worried about breaking anything. but in your case i would worry about shearing knuckle studs putting so much pressure on them for turning. and also your diff choice. is it locked or limitted slip or selectable locker or even open. because if its fully locked up front i would say dont do it

The pinion might be your weak link. I've heard have higher gears like 4.10s will be stronger with rubber that big.

hes right it would be stronger. but you need a hell of a motor and trans to turn 39.5's under a yota with 4.11's

last season i was on toy mini axle up front and fj 80 in the rear with 39.5 iroks and the only thing i broke was a steering pin(the pin that goes through the arm into the trunion bearing) and that was im sure from the 3" wheel spacers. and i wheel HARD. your set up is fine, check your knuckle studs often and you'll be fine

My buddy runs Calroc for 2 years on 27 spline longs welded gears and stock steering arms and full hydro.  Calroc is harder on a rig then pretty much any trail due to it being a timed event plus skill level. He was running 39.5 iroks and besides breaking knuckle studs and trashing a few sets of trunion bearings the toyota axle handles the tires fine.  He since upgraded to 30 longs and 6 shooter knuckles plus an arb front.  I guess we will see how it goes this yr for him.  He tends to push his rig very hard so if he doesnt break something its a miracle. lol

I was running 39.5 IROKs on my '85 and only broke a couple of stock birfs. I had dual cases and stock gears and had no real trouble of the trail.  One of the guys in our groups has a 4.3 and 40's and he never breaks birfs. So I don't see to much of an issue.

i have 40's for the snow, they won't see rocks until i get dual cases.
That is with 5.29's in the axles.I have blown up a few diffs, but it was freak accidents, not so much the tire size.

Thomas took his ride to the rubicon with 42" iroks, 2.5" bs wheels, hydro assist, 5.29's spool in back lockright in front, dual ultimates, arp studs with a 5th stud kit and did fine.

I think it comes down to how lucky you are.  Some of us are less lucky than others when it comes to breaking parts. lol

do it!  i'm trying to trade my 37in. mtr's right now for a set of 39.5's.  had a buddy that ran 39.5's in his yj with toy axles under it.  did great until he broke the lockrite.  then he spooled it, problem solved.

Just an interesting article comparing a 571 gear to a 410 gear set (5.29 would be comparable to)

I run 39.5 iroks... Stock steering studs hydro assist longs and geared duals...I havent had ne problems just keep your steering nuts tight and dont go crazy. U HAVE to have Longfields tho. If u run that big of tire on stockers your just gonna be a trail tampon...
