22r carb on a 20r
« on: Mar 20, 2010, 12:17:38 PM »
Has anybody done the 22r carb on a 20r?

I know it's more cfm (like 300 vs. 190) but do you actually notice it?  I was planning on rebuilding my carb soon on my '80 with the 20r and I also have a 22r carb wasting away so I thougt maybe I should just rebuild it instead and buy the $29 adapter from LC if I can get a little more power.

You'd feel a similar boost to installing a weber 32/36.  Do it, you'll definately feel a nice boost.

If you do this, let me know how it goes.  I'm planning it myself, but am a bit concerned about which vacuum lines to plug, and whether or not I should us the water choke from my 20r on the 22r carb.

Guess I'd better figure out what the heck the water choke is!

I've done it.

The extra CFM helps for sure on the highway, but at the expense of gas mileage it seemed.

Bypassing the water choke is easy. Use a straight barb connector from the plumbing section of your favorite hardware store, and join the two hoses together and hose clamp it.

Figuring out the vacuum hoses can be tricky, but if you live in a non-smogging state, then I'd just use the simplest diagram possible from the Haynes manual.

Don't hold your breath because I'm so burried between work and my '94 / 3RZ / '88 4runner project the '80 will probably go on the back burner for a while...  Plus the truck is primarily just for dirt road / daily driver duty so milage is a consideration.  I've been able to pull 22 mpg on the highway with the current setup.

My fuel mileage sucks anyway (my 20r carb is pretty shot) so I'm used to it.  LOL.  May as well get the better HP and pretend the mileage is the same.

I was hoping to drive the rig down to Joshua Tree next weekend, but with it chugging so bad at 60mph it'd be an annoying trip.

do the swap, you will be pleased,  you also need to go to either a header or a 22R twin tube exhaust down to under the cab then into a 2 1/4 inch tube

Does a header flow much better than a 22r exhaust?  ie.  is it worth the extra $350?

It's not just that it flows better, it's that it flows!  Look inside the 20r manifold, it's just 4 holes dumping into an open chamber.  Exhaust gases just come out and tumble around all willy nilly.  Using a later model 22r manifold will be like using a small tri-y header, since it is a tri-y design.  A header will help even more, but I'd look for a good used one if I were you.  I got my nwor off ebay for $125ish used.

My '80 came with a long tube header.  I don't know what brand it is but it appears to be good quality.

Research has discouraged me from putting the 22r carb on.  I just don't want to deal with the vacuum mess and smog.  Going with a smog legal Weber.
