88' Extra cab Yota
« on: Mar 17, 2010, 11:39:33 PM »
Well, after owning this vehicle for over two years, I have finally started putting time into it.

Maybe the lay off helped motivate me, maybe I just got motivated, but either way it has begun.

Specs to start
1988 toyota truck
2.4l 22re
Auto trans
2" body lift on the cab None on the Bed
Couple Shotgun blasts to the bed (long story)
Otherwise stock.

First step was pulling out the crappy auto and doing a "5 spd swap"
Well, that was fine, except, The motor wasn't all that healthy, nor was any of the wiring I had seen.

So, I have a full drive train out of a 1991. Why not.

I Pulled the 91 dash, gauges, trans, motor, entire wiring harness, and eeeeverything else.

Of course, nothing fit right. So now I have a b*std child with a half divorced dash.

Whatever, its a trail rig. i don't care.

Then, I decided the whole truck was far to long, so I cut some off.
Just the gold actually. Who likes gold paint anyway. Pretty faboulous...

And then Cut it off..yea.

Weld it back on (yeap, it looks like crap. i don't care)

Put some primer on it, call it a day!

A long time ago, erm, when i was last motivated, i actually welded up the rear dif. So I have some traction.
But, since then I have been stocking up on parts for more better'r stuff.

Last swap meet I pickup up a set of 4.88 gears, a spare t-case (to put my shiney new XD 4.7's in...when ever they get here) and a few other random things here and there.

I also ordered up a 1.5" drive train lift cross member from Budbuilt and a mini install kit for my said gears.

Now I get to wait for a week for everything to arive and then more gears get to be turned!!! Yaaay

So far I have only taken it out twice wheeling and managed to tear off a side wall the first trip. So, the other day I handed over a few bills and got a set of 5 33" BFG MT's to putter around on.

More pics to come of later work!!

I like the no care menatily of this build up, it should be fun and intersting when dont care about what happens to it on the trail heads.

Well, the truck had two 12 guages holes on either side, the windshields leaked, the couling panels were rotten, there isn't any carpet or interior aside from dash and seats. So, yeah, its a wheeler.
Oh, and the whole creeper bars on the windows..yeah.. thats another long story. But basically someone thought it was a good idea since the window got broken to do that. Theft deterant? I would say yes, but it got stolen a month after.

Anything structural is going to be tough as nails, but body work. Psssh, whatever.

I'm pretty sure I'll be picking up my tires today while im out running errands for friends.

Ya i understand, i look forward to the progress, and wheeling pics. When I bought my 85, it leaked at windshields, doors dont close all the way, hole in the floor, and windows dont roll well,
Am not worried about that stuff like you too, even though i fixed the leaky windshield and windows on doors somewhat, i left the gaps at the doors, and hole in the floor lol, no carpet either just dash, dash pad, and seats, and my body and paint looks bad too
WEll enough of me rambling :gap: Are you getting the km2s? Tell us how they work

I wish!!  Just the older BFG MTs

Pretty narrow, but they are on the Tacoma 6 spoke alloy which holds a bead pretty well. So, we will see!!

narrow is good for soft loam and rocks, but im not really sure about how well they do in the snow or in the mudd or some slick rock. Not that anything does well on slick rock.

Aaand a bit of an update! I love the gearing and the cross member!

After a few weeks of wheeling, I now have some seriously new body lines, missing an Xcab window and am rethinking my tail light/turn signals.

Good times in the snow and around the trees in the Pacific North West!
