What size bolt to remove pilot bearing?

I just ordered my clutch on Friday. Can't wait to put it in. I know the trick to fill the pilot bearing with grease and then pound in a bolt to loosen it. Anyone know what size bolt I should use?

my favorite hillbilly trick is to use a junk 3/8 in. extension wraped with electrical tape.  i wrap it a few times and test fit it before i fill the cavity with grease once the correct wrapping is found then fill it with grease and hammer away!

hey thanks a lot. I happen to have a couple of extensions I've already ruined. Now I'm glad i held onto them.

sometimes i use the clutch alignment tool as well.  the tip of it is the perfect size for obvious reasons.

also i have used anything insight and wraped paper towles or rags around it to fit.  i like the tape method i need to remember that one.

i have right now a wooden dowel that i sanded to fit about five years ago in my tool box.
1985 4runner on 35 boggers.  22re, W56 tranny, daul cases with 4:1 in the back case, ford f150 fronts with 63" chevys in the back, cross over steering, full width chevy axles with detroit back and ARB front,

I tried the tape trick but it kept sliding back. What I did find was that the 17mm bolts that bolt the rear tranny support to the frame are the perfect size.

what i forgot to mention is that you need to clean the extension with brakleen first.  and it sounds like you had too much tape on it.
glad too see you found something that works for you sometimes you find something that will work for you but not everyone.  sounds like you found your trick!

I simply beat the crap out of it - replacing it anyway. The grease method has never worked for me..

:hmm:good point ive needed to do that a few times and felt like doing it more times than that!! :angel:  sometimes it takes a little more  :.order:that means it comes out but its :oops:!!!

I would pound the bolt in a little, remove it, and add a little more grease. As the pilot bearing moves forward you need to keep adding grease to keep the pressure from behind. Once its out you can clean all your grease out. I found that the back side of a 17 mm socket was perfect for getting the new bearing in.

Ive always just filled it with grease until the pressure of the grease pushed it out .
95 Tacoma Extra cab, many mods to come........

Why mess with grease and crap and jerry-rigging when you can make this in 10 min and it will last forever. :moon:
