keep tacoma or build up 89-94 pickup

Keep the Tacoma or get a 89-94 pickup?

So I own a 98 toyota tacoma and I am debating weither to keep it or to sell it and get a early 90's pickup and SAS it.

Keep tacoma
put 33's on to replace the 31's when 31's go bald
Wheel it's IFS for 4 years and slowly build it up after it's paid off
Be careful not to damage the body panels

VS.

Buy 89-94 ext cab 22RE
SAS it within a year, 35's, 5.29 gears
3-4 years down the road get duals and lockers
Wheel it hard

id build the tacoma once its payed off plus it has more power than a 22re

I had a '97 Tacoma that I wheeled for 2 years.  I probably wheeled it a little too hard...  But everything was just getting jacked up on that truck.  It got to the point that it wasn't handling the road or the trail very well.  And I was tired of paying more for everything than the mini truck guys.  So I picked up an '80 because I love that body style.  Now I can beat on my truck pretty damn hard.  And sure it doesn't handle pavement very well, but with the money I got selling the Tacoma, and buying the '80, I bought another car.

I vote for the pickup...  but if you're going to have like $6000 to make the Tacoma a beast when it's paid off, change my vote to that.
'80 Pickup, 5VZ-FE engine, A340F transmission, Marlin gear drive adapter, Dual Ultimate transfer cases, 5.29 gears, Detroit rear/Lockrite front locker, 37" Goodyear MTRs, XRC8 winch, custom tube bed and armor

The tacoma would follow the same general build as the pickup except for it costs more to SAS a tacoma so it would take even longer to build up than the pickup.

i was in the same boat as you were last year. i decided to obviously build my Tacoma as a DD/Crawler. i'm no where near done but it took me about 2 months to slowly buy the parts and installed in a couple days. i don't wheel it hard but i do go through the Rubicon no problems with 5.29/5.38, 35's and a stock tcase. so i guess the question is how hard to you want to wheel it. If you really wanna bash down asap then get older gen and build that. or get a DD and build your taco. hope that rant helped you at all.

After seeing how the early F150s use a HP D44, id like to set up a Tacoma the same way.

I voted for the Tacoma.

Poke around, you'll find that it won't cost more (and probably less) to SA the tacoma at least.  I don't remember the exact years toyota went to D side drop t-case,  Idon't remember if it started with the earliest tacomas or not.  If it did, you could just pick up a D44 driver side drop, the hangers, etc. and go from there.  You can even keep it six lug. 

If it were still pass. you  could go with a toy axle or a pass drop D44 (wagoneer) and same thing.  The D44s tend to be significantly cheaper than a toy axle, and for decent wheeling they'll hold up ok.

Keep the taco.    Buy a junk 89-94 and gradually build it up.  I don't care what anyone says.  Once you build up a trail truck on 35's or bigger and trail thrash it its no fun as a daily driver.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

All Tacomas are driver drop.  And I've never heard of D44 being cheaper...  But I suppose I have never purchased anything for a D44, so I don't know.  It just always seemed to me that any kit purpose built for the Tacoma has a few extra dollars tacked on to it.
