first gen pickup shackle question
« on: Feb 22, 2010, 05:53:39 PM »
Ok i have a completly bone stock first gen truck.  I'm going to be replacing the front leafs with another stock set but in better shape than the ones i have on it.  I figured while i was at it i would see about replacing the shackles or at least replacing the bushings.  Ive read some places that people were getting a extra 1" or 2" of lift just from shackles.  Is that possible?  If so i only would want a 1" of lift to give the 31" tires some more room.  I looked on marlin and tg but the only shackle kits i came across are one for people who are running 4-5" of lift, definatly not what i'm needing.  So is getting the extra lift with just a longer shackle good or bad idea?  If bad where can i get stock shackles or the parts to rebuild mine?

replacing your front springs with another set of front springs wont give you any results.  all you need to do is find some rear springs and take a couple leaves from that and install them in your front spring packs,  this will give you more than enough lift.

OH  and your first gen will easily handle 31's with absolutely no lift at all.

No, using long shackles for lift is NOT a good thing, especially in the front,  not so bad for the rear.

thanks for the reply, i really have no intention of lifting the truck any higher than it is.  I had a lifted dodge full size before and it was overkill for what i was doing.  Which is mainly just fire roads, dirt roads and the snow we get here in tulsa.  i'm replacing my front springs cause they sag to much, i only have about 2 fingers between the leafs and bump stops, i was told i should be able to put 3-4 fingers in there.  Looks like i will be seeing if i can replace the bushing instead.

Nothing wrong with an 1 1/2 shackle lift on the fronts, I do it all the time.
