can a 44 hold up...
« on: Feb 06, 2010, 09:34:27 PM »
If i were to put a spool in the front, do you guys think it would hold up? Upgraded axle shafts and u-joints?

and if so, would it be better to get a spool or a mini spool? I know we all have our opinons of dana 44s but :pokinit: talk aside, its in my truck and I want to lock it.

wanna man up 500 bucks for me dan? lol I would love to do dual selectables but thats going in the rear. I want the front locked but I know 44s arent the strongest and Im really not sure "how" strong you can make them. If it would hold up to a locker. I would like to run long fields in it like a 60 but bobby doesnt make em. I have been lookin for shafts and u-joints but not impressed with any yet.

i think it all come down to , what kind of driver you are. and what size tire you run, if your running under a 40inch tire and your lite on the gas, you should be just fine, from what i understand, a built dana 44 is about the same as a stock 60.  hope it helps.

Cody,
I found some 44 chromeolys that are supposed to be as strong as longs. Yukon has them they are 50% stronger than stock with a lifetime warranty. Has anyone else heard of these?

i had a buddy that ran a welded 44 in his 85 chev pu with a deisel and he never broke his axles.... so in a yota that is lighter you shouldnt have to much of a problem, but then again around here its mostly mud and non traction surfaces
Those are some huge welds!

A buddy of mine blew apart the 44 under his Toyota Trailblazer(swap done by PO) w/ARB (38's and 40's) just about every other time he went out.  Granted he had a Vortec in it and often a heavy right foot, but it let go in the snow last March.  I don't know how it would have worked w/a 4cyl and light foot, however he drove his '84 X-cab w/a built 22r/37's/manual/duals(stock & 4.7's) w/first a lockright/then an ARB just as hard, and the toyota axle(w/longs) never broke.  If you run the spool or mini spool run some  hubs, far easier/quicker to change them trailside than anything else.
'90 black X-cab mod'd 3.0, 33's/4.88's, rear ARB, custom bumpers, sliders, safari rack, etc.
'91 Blue X-cab 22re, 35's/5.29's,Truetrac front, ARB rear, dual cases, and custom Safari flatbed, bumper, interior.
