OK so I had good results on my last question I thought I would give this topic a try,   I am going to be purchasing some long overdue shop equipment with my tax return. I build furniture and work on my Yota. I have been using my buddies stuff and even he doesn't have everything I need. I want allot but can't afford everything so I am trying to decide what to get first. The things I want : keep in mind I wish I had a million dollars to buy everything imaginable but I don't so. . .

Tube Bender : I have been reading up and will probably get the JD2 model 3 and a pipe notcher.

Band saw : I haven't done much research yet so this is one I could use some advice on. It would be for cutting tube, sheet metal, and possably wood by changing the blade   so what brand and motor size and how thick of metal can it cut.

Chop saw : Do I need one or can I get away with just the band saw.


Cutting torch : I would like to find one on craigslist but if not then I will buy new.

Drill Press : What size motor do I need to drill a good sized whole 1" through something like 1/4 steel? don't know if I need to do that but want to be able to.

Table Saw : I know more about the wood stuff but any one know a good place to buy from?

Plainer : Haven't owned one only used a big one at a shop but I will probably get a electric hand plainer maybe 12"?

I have some stuff like hand tools and a good ol angle grinder. Are there any other tools that you can think of that I am not?

You can get one of those band saws that will fold down and cut like a chop saw and kill two birds with one stone.  All of the other tools you listed except the tube bender you can probably find on Craigslist used for pennies on the dollar.  Thats where I find most of my expensive tools.  With the economy the wy it is there are plenty of people who sell this stuff to make ends meet.

I would buy what ever you can get a better deal on. Craigslist and yard sales are the best source for tools.

Priorities would be
1 Chop Saw
2 Drill Press
3 Torch

As for a table saw, I use my grandpa Grizzy very basic and very old! I have a craftsman and one job latter its on its death bed (Paid $40 at a yard sale, got my money out of it).

I believe they're called vertical horizontal saws, and it was going to be my suggestion too    I think JET makes one that's pretty affordable, not a lot more than the craptastic harbor freight model.

If you're getting a quality bandsaw, I'd save some $ on the chop saw and go with the mid grade HF model.  It'll do most of what you want it to do, and what it can't do, you can use the band saw.

CL is definitely the way to go right now, there's a lot of good deals.

Well after a little more research I found that the Pro tools manual bender is on sale. It's a package deal with a bunch of stuff and allot cheaper the the Jd2.

Are there used dies available anywhere for either one of these? I saw on another thread that someone couldn't find them for one of the two benders

I'm pretty sure that's the same exact model my brother has and the same one I'd buy if I had the money.  I'd be willing to bet the northern tools and hf are the same unit.

I have the horizontal metal cutting bandsaw from HF. It works, can cut up to 4x6 tubing. I just use 24tpi for most everything. Because I cut a lot .065 wall tubing. If youre gonna cut .120 then get like a 18tpi. THat will cut steel, aluminum, wood etc. It comes with a little "table" you can attach to it to use vertical.

I have a 2/3 horse craftsman drill press I can drill a one inch pretty easy.

I used to use a chop saw until I got the bandsaw. Only time I ever use it now is when cutting something in the field.

Angle finders, right angle clamps and I have many many Hf locking pliers. You know the big C style looking ones, you can never have too many clamps.

And of course a good table to work off of. Right now I just made a frame and use a sheet of 3/4inch mdf

Cool thats good info, I used to buy alot of HF stuff but try not to buy anything over $50 bucks there. I saw a 3/4 Hp drill that wasn't to bad on price I don't remeber what is was now thow. I don't have alot of the c clamps and crap that I used to, hmmmm I wonder why. and my work table is gonna be a steal plate with round tube legs on heavy casters.

Ok so I found a Drill press I like, the Ridgid 15 in. Model # DP1550 stationary drill press for About $300.

I found this Air compressor at Home Depot Husky 13 Gallon Kit that comes with some goodies for $229.

Of course I am gonna try craigslist and yard sales first but this will give me an idea of what to look for and how much a good deal actually is.

If you ever plan on painting anything larger than a propane cylinder, pass on that compressor.  I'd go for something in the 60 gallon range, 30+ minimum for geo size projects.  I've seen some good deals on used 60 gallon models on craigslist, I just don't have room enough for a horizontal and never have the money when a vertical 60 shows up.

There have been a few good deals on Craigslist but of course I don't have any money yet but I'm sure I'll find some good shite.
