Tail Light Wiring Problems Experts Please Help
« on: Jan 31, 2010, 06:09:02 PM »
Well without pics it might be a little tricky but here goes.

1990 toyota pickup trying to hook up a 24 L.E.D. taillight

Left side rear wiring harness consist of:
2 white wires
1 red wire
2 green wires with red hashes
1 green wire with black stripe with red hashes
1 green wire with white stripe with red hashes

Right side rear wiring harness consist of:
2 red wires
2 white wires
2 green with red hashes
1 green wire with yellow stripe with red hashes
2 green wire with white stripe with red hashes

And the 24 LED light has three wires coming off white red and black and the back of the light says brake & turn then tail, then ground.

I'm completly lost and a very wiring challenged, so any help or a picture of how to wire this thing up would be great.  Wiring diagram for dummies anything.

You need to get a test light. Turn the headlight switch on to park and using the test light find the wires that light up the test light. If I remember right, there are three, two for the tail ights and one for the license plate light. Write down the colors. Press the brake pedal down and test which ones light the test light, write down. Turn the left turn signal and test, do the same for the right. Put the tranny in reverse and test for light. The rest should be the same color and are grounds.

Toyotas use a seprate light for the turn signals and brake lights. What you have now will not work right unless you get a converter at a trailer supply, some auto parts stores also sell them. Follow the instructions for hooking it up.

Yup, I picked up a converter at my local trailer shop.  Pretty straight forward after that.  Just use a light tester to see what is what.
