Help me get back to 2wd..... haha
« on: Jan 28, 2010, 04:59:26 PM »
I have an 85 yota with dual stock cases and took out the rear shifter today to replace the metal "gasket" piece and removed the front shifter to fill with more fluid. I put it all back together and now im stuck in 4wd. I think it has to do with the rear shifter as it can shifts up and down fine but when I try to flip it to the left, there is no resistance. So on the vertical part of the J pattern seems to click into place but the lateral J part does nothing. I took a pic of the innards on my cell but cant send to my e-mail (only other phones). When I pull the shifter out, the two parts that interact with the shifter are offset like so:

Where did I go wrong???

Thanks

If I understand you correctly I think you just need to pull the shifter back out and manually shift your rails into proper position. Then reinstall your shifter.

Use a screwdriver and shift both rails so the notches on both shifter rails are aligned. Then drop the shifter in and try it.

I did the same thing recently and couldn't figure out what the heck I did wrong. There was no resitance because when I shifted one rail the end of the shifter got in front of the other shift rail and not in the notch. The shifter just flopped side to side and only shifted one rail forward and backward.

I hope this helps you out. I'm guessing though without pics.

This sounds like it! I just didn't know what it was and didn't want to do anything I couldn't take back.... funds are tight so experimentation goes down. If this doesn't work Ill grab a pic.

Thanks for the help
