E-Brake Cable Question
« on: Jan 26, 2010, 05:02:28 PM »
My 88 pickup e-brake cable broke and local parts stores don't even list one. Is this a dealer only item?

I need the front section. It broke right at the cab end.

Anybody got an aftermarket part number? Please don't tell me I have to go to the stealership or a bone yard.

check out www.toyodiy.com for the oem part number, then you can cross reference it with parts stores

Thanks for the info, I'll get my VIN and see what I can find.

If anybody else has info feel free to post it.

Broke mine also and the dealer was not that bad if I recall it was less than $100.

jimbo74, Thanks for the link. I found the correct part number.

Unfortunately, nobody seems to carry aftermarket brake cables for the 4x4's. They do have them for 2 wheel drive models.

8D3TOY, They are under $100. I was quoted $74.16.

The 2x2 cable I got by mistake is a Raybestos and was only $15.99. If it was longer I could make it work.

I'm cheap and have a hard time paying the dealer that much for a cable.

Looks like the dealer or boneyard unless anybody else has some info.

I have an 88 pickup 4x4, 22RE, 5speed, regular cab. Toyota part number for the cable is 46410-35340.

My local NAPA had none listed for 4x4. Thanks for checkin.

I got mine from the dealer for something like $65.  I was going to get one from the junkyard, but would have been pissed if I put it in and it broke again since it would be just as old.

Also it only takes about 1/2 hour to remove the broken one and replace with the new.  I had to take the parking brake lever off the dash to get full access and take the brake light switch off to get the cable replaced.

You're right jtaco1, I'm not going to take a chance on an old used one. I already have mine off, no big deal.

I found one on-line for $55 but with shipping is more than just going down to my local dealer.

I just hate having to go to the dealer on a part like this. If I don't get some info for an aftermarket cable I'm going to get one ordered up tomorrow from the dealer.

Thanks everybody.

I repaired mine about 2-3 years ago and it holds up fine.
Here's a write up I did on it.

Just to let everybody know. I couldn't do the repair because my cable ended up being really bad. I would have had to cut too much off. I'm sure the repair would have worked otherwise.

The cheapest cable I found is from Toyota Parts Zone for $57.97 + $8.60 shipping to my area. I found cheaper prices but the shipping was outrageous.

Make sure the bellcranks arent siezed either. (on inboaard side of backing plate forces the shoes out , activating the brake)
happens alot
sometimes can be worked loose by tapping.
The Toyota recalls are  conspiracies created by the government to protect and promote their investments (GM and Chrysler).
Im not joking
