which manual will fit an 88 V6
« on: Nov 22, 2004, 05:55:43 PM »
My Rig: 1988 4-runner with auto tranny and 3.0 V6
My goal: swap in a 5 speed manual so I can run dual cases

I called and talked to (dean?) at Marlin Crawler today and he said that the transmissions I can use is the R150 (which would be a drop in) or I could use a R151 from a 4cyl turbo and use a bell housing from an R150.

My other question is I have access to a w56 tranny for a good price that allready is set up with dual ultimate cases. Will the bell housing from a R150 fit the W56?

:edit: How much should I pay for a used R150....Does anybody have one they want to sell or a good place to look on the internet?????

Hey wood,

no no no........ If you want to go Dualcases and you've gotta ditch your drivetrain anyways, then DO NOT buy a R150F transmission, get a 1986-1987 22R-TE 5-spd transmission, the R151F.

See, In order to use any kind of Crawler, you've got to use gear drive transfercases. This is standard behind the R151F as both it's tailhousing and output shaft are ready for a gear drive transfercase. The R150F V6 transmission on the otherhand, is not designed for the gear drive transfercase and you must buy a $350 adapter (P/N# 30-4GT) simply to allow gear drive transfercases to go behind it.

So what you need to do is get a bellhousing from a 1988-1995 3VZ-FE 3.0l V6 R150F transmission and bolt that to the front of a R151F transmission. Now you've got the same transmission (R-series) and its already ready for the gear drive transfercases. This will save you an extra $350 adapter that you can avoid.

And about the W56, My only question is "Why?" It's not as good as a R-transmission and the transfercase setup will be weaker (21-spline vs. 23-spline).

If you are going to do all of this work, then you are going to do it right, you're gonna use a R-transmission.

I forgot to answer about the W and R compatibility...

... nope, not at all. Both front housings use 9 bolts, but the pattern on the R-series' housing is larger than the G- and W-series' pattern (which are the same).

So you would have to make a custom bellhousing in order to make your drivetrain weaker. :ack:

Also, in a similar sense, G- and W-series bellhousings do not fit on the front of a R-series transmission. This was one of the first things I looked into when I was doing my 3RZ conversion. I would love to have a R151F behind my 2.7 engine but its gonna require a custom bellhousing and its really not that important to me right now.

Thanks BigMike. That helps me out a ton

:edit: the other benifit by going with the R151F -vs- R150F is the 151 has the lower 1st gear (4.31) wear-as the 150 only has 3.83. Thanks again I am now on a quest to find a R151F...Anybody have one(R151F) that wants to trade for a 1992 22re with fuel injection and wiring harness??
