antifreeze leak
« on: Dec 31, 2009, 07:25:05 PM »
I found antifreeze on my floor panel today, on the right side undeneath the floor mat, is that the heater core gone again, or thersmat, or ? I was thinking whats that smell lol, and then i found it. right underneath the floor mat on the right side of the truck, its an 85x-cab 22re, it wasnt much just some a lil bit of green stuff.
and the day before i had the deforster on and everything, and when i checked my antifreeze today it was a lil low.

any suggestions, am thinking thermstat or heater core, or o-rings back there.

The t stat is in the block. So its the heater core. You need to take it out and see if its the core itself or just a hose. With a truck at old, have you ever replaced any hoses? Now would be a good time to start.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

Yeah just loop the hose or plug it off but you won't have a heater anymore

if the heater core is goin bad every two years, you might want to check your cooling system for electrolosis. check to see if your coolant is generating voltage. i had a problem with that it was eating thru the heater core. if youre gonna put a new heater core in make sure you tie in a ground strap from the core to your firewall

my mechanic told me 200$ to fix seems like alot for just a heater core anyhow, how hard is it to remove everything, am thinking of removing the heater, heater blower etc, and throwing it away, also is it ok to disable the ac unit, is it safe to take it off and everything, it doesnt work anyhow, because the ac needs charged, but i dont want to get free-on in my eyes lol

also can i see pics of how to bypass the heater core, i forgot how

just take the two rubber lines that go to the heater core off of it,   and then connect them together.   very eazy.
then you have no heat air cond nothing.

There has got to be some reason why it is only lasting 2 years you need a new mechanic!!!
I was wondering how many times have you replaced it?

how does that happen??

im not sure exactly how it happens but i think its caused by old coolant that starts to conduct small amounts of electricity and corrodes the metal over time and causes the thin walls of the heater core to break down. i was told this by a tech i used to work with when i used to wrench.

elecrolosis is caused by poor grounds your car makes power and needs a ground to stop with poor grounds the power goes to antifreeze or water then starts to eat away at metal.
