Brakes
« on: Dec 24, 2009, 06:44:51 PM »
A friend is parting out a 97 4Runner and I can pick up whatever I want. I have a 85 4Runner with an 86 rear already in it and I have FJ60 rotors waiting to be installed. I'm wondering if I can install the MC, brake booster, front calipers or the rear brakes. The MC and the calipers are what I'm most interested in.
He using the 3.4 for his son's truck but is there anything else worth getting? I'm also getting the V6 rear 3rd member.

Thanks for the info. Pulled the parts and so far other than having to bend the 85's front steel line coming out of the MC to match, I can't see any issues. I'm sure glad it's easy to mix 1st gen and 3rd gen so far.

Hopefully someone knows. Marlin sells the V6 calipers, but it says they are for up to 95. My old 97 2wd 4Runner had 16 inch wheels, so did they change to bigger calipers?

The calipers will not work, they are bigger. You can buy a kit from FROR to use them. I just bought and will be putting them on my rig along with a set of 90 IFS wheel bearing hubs.

is the rear 3rd an e-locker, or not, if it isnt, its an 8.4 and u will have to use the whole housing to use the 3rd.  if its an e-locker, it will work in your truck with some housing modification.

It doesn't have an e locker and I can have the whole rear end I want it. Are gears and lockers readily available? Pardon my ignorance right now, been spending more money with my divorce attorney than on my first love. LOL

Just in case someone else tries to use 97 parts. The MC has holes to mount to the booster so you'll have to swap boosters. The "T" fitting/ bracket needs to be ground to fit the MC and the holes for the studs have to be elongated. The diameter of the booster is larger so I'm slightly rubbing the steering shaft at the universal joint, this should be fairly easy to fix.
