are 22R/RE blocks the same???
« on: Nov 18, 2004, 02:16:05 PM »
Just bought an 86 4x4 EFI. The whole top end is pretty much new. But the short block is trash. I do have an 83 22R with low miles. I'm about 75% sure that they can be swapped (blocks that is). But I just wanted to make sure before I tore into it all.

Early and late model blocks are NOT the same.  Toyota used a "tall deck" block until 1984, and then switched to the newer "short deck" design.  there is a difference in block height of about 0.4 inches, and the heads are different.  You can use that head on your tall deck, though(I think Marlin runs this setup).  If I remember correctly, you need later model flat top pistons, but i could be wrong about that.

with an '83, just swap the long block in and bolt your EFI manifold to it.

I think 88+ blocks are laser cut.

I can live with that. Using the long block off the 83. Just found out that the 86 enging is beyond saving. Something about a hole in the side of the block I can almost stick me fist through. But I now have a lot of brand new stuff (timing chain, guides, etc. not to mention the head) that'll just take up space in the garage. I mean this stuff doesn't even have 50 miles on it yet.

Billy,  put your 83 block and head in your truck and put your efi on it, simple deal,

i 'm like mike i think it was 88 they had the laser block, aka shorter deck

you can look at the left side of the block about where the dipstick goes in if there is a small oval shaped place,  its actually where the turbo tube would have gone had it been a turbo model

pan to deck on early engines was 11.280
laser blocks were 11.080
basically 11 1/4 inches and 11 inches
