Im new an have prob a dumb question, but why do some rigs have tire chains?
Not sick, but not well.

So those of us who dont use them have someone to laugh at.... :haha:

00taco

cuz you get further when u dont have a fully built rig

monk #1164

mine is built right I just like the insurance...besides I drove wherever I pointed it with little to no problems. as for some of those on the back of my strap didn't have a problem getting there while hooked up...lol...
LETS HIT THE TRAILS!

It really doesn't take a fully built rig just really low air pressure in the tires. 86rustbucket got to the tower last week with a welded rear, open front, and 33's. I went to the tower and back to V rock Saturday while the chain guys were chaining up and driving in. My rig has both locked and 35's but it had 5 lb of air in the fronts and less than that in the rear. I would rather get stuck and get out than run chains because the guys I used to wheel with would laugh at you and throw snowballs at you all day if you put chains on. If you have a air tank so you can air down enough you can go anywhere the guys with chains and not aired down go in the snow. If its icy that's another story.
I have to admit I did get stuck near the top because I was worried about a popping a bead and I had too much air (8lb and 5lb). . After airing down to 5 and ? I drove to the tower without a problem. I always worry about popping a bead but I've never done it,  :hammerhead: (knock on wood) and I have ran aluminum and steel rims with no beadlocks. Carry a spare, get a compressor (or tank) and poke fun at the guys with chains.  :moon:
A side note if you have a compressor have a reserve tank on it so you have enough air to pop a bead back on unless you are a starting fluid guy. That always scares me tho.

If you really wanted to help people out you would help the guys without chains air down and give them pointers about how to make it. Not just pull them on a strap and laugh about it and post their pics on the site. That just makes you kind of an  ass. That doesn't help them, it just makes you feel good and they didnt learn anything about wheeling.

monk #1164

I'm not laughing at anyone most of the guys with us didn't have chains or lockers and they had a great time too. as for pointing the finger at them, It didn't happen, but some of the other guys here certainly did at us... but I think thats a Jeep hater thing. I don't care what you drive as long as you have a good time, with little damage, alls good.I just happen to do it the Jeep way...

Pulled me a few times, as far as traction at 5lbs not happening with my cheap GT Radials. Bought full chains! Works!

i could put chains on my gmc yukon and make it to the tower, but where is the fun in that?

I'm just saying it would be better to try to help out the people with less built rigs by giving them pointers and helping them help themselves. Then next time they will do better and be more confident. I think chains are like winches, you use them to get home if you have to.   You get stuck with your chains on you are really up  :pokinit: creek.
I didn't want to start a big whooplaw, I just didn't like the "LOL" about pulling guys up the trail.

And I don't dislike jeeps, I think they are great little cars and every college girl should have one
