why not just use an ac pump or york pumo. plumb it and wire it up. then air up the tire?

100 bux at most, if you already have the pump

  Big Ron that is what I was looking for when I started this thread. There is no way I was going to give up my AC living in So. Cal. I built a bumper that I plan to use as an air tank. So this should work great for me. Did you say you plan to use two?

it's a modified starter motor, not a winch motor. I have a friend that tried to make his own with a winch motor, it pulled WAY too many amps.
How did it work minus the pulling too many amps?  I'm really interested in making one.

x2. I'd like to hook my york up to something besides my engine. I saw a warn winch motor on eBay for $80 and was wondering if that would work.  :dunno:

Just a guess but I would bet it wouldn't be as fast because the winch motor has a lower RPM.  :dunno:

You do realize that they are geared to be like 250 to 1 right? so without the gears its prob gonna be fast

Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

Max RPM on a York is 6K.  Most of those winch motors turn at 2K.  If I build one, I was thinking about gearing it to get closer to 6K for more CFM.

You're right. A quick check on fleeBay and they typically all turn at 2100 rpm. Another quick search and I see the York cranks out 7.3 CFM at 2000 rpm, but I think that was at 0psi. At any rate, thats good enough for me to save time and hook that sucker directly up to the output shaft on the winch motor rather than dealing with the gearing. Only thing is I wonder if the 4.5HP winch motor would be ok turning the compressor when directly hooked up.

Any idea how many amps a winch motor pulls?

Here's the specs on a Warn M8000
http://www.warn.com/truck/winches/src/M8000.shtml

Line Pull Lbs.(Kgs.)    Line Speed FT./min    Motor Current
0                            42                          80 amps
2000                        16                         200 amps
4000                       11.9                         285 amps
6000                       9.79                         350 amps
8000                        8.01                        435 amps

So a fully loaded 8000lb Warn winch will draw 435amps.  I don't see a York putting too much strain on that 4.5hp motor so it can't be but 80-200amps.  Yeah, it will suck down your battery pretty quick but since it puts out a crapton of air, it won't take long to air up your tires.

I am said friend!

I used cheap winch motor (ramsey that would spin 7k RPM) and the york

Designed a really nice bracket in solid works, I built the bracket at work on the mill, looked pro!  Got the coupler from MMC to run it direct drive, bolted it all together and it ran like a sowing machine! Except that the jumper cables I was using to power it were glowing red hot......  I can't remember how many amps it drew, but it was a metric :pokinit: ton.  I don't think that the thing would even spin at 90 PSI.

Bottom line is, the motor I used (and I suspect many winch motors) depend on the gearing of the winch to make the torque.

Here is what I will do.  I will scrap it back together and make a new thread JUST about my compressor build.  I have more ideas about how to do this, but haven't had time to lay them out.  Also, I lost ALL of my drawings for the damn thing when I sold my old laptop. Dumbass here didn't remember to save to the new comp!  :hammerhead:

PS
PhantomD is on his way to my house, and we will get it fired up for some pics.

Phazertwo, I'm glad we found you. Now we can get info straight from the horses mouth. Depending on the size of your jumper cables, that may have been a limiting factor in getting power to your motor.

Volcom - I didn't realize winches drew that many amps. Considering your standard alternator puts out 105-145 amps you can kill your battery pretty quick if you aren't careful. Sounds like you have to gear down from the motor to the compressor which will cause your motor to pull less amps, but in turn lower your rpm of your compressor resulting in less CFM.

Phazertwo, let us know what your revised design entails.    :eyebrow:

You are correct that the size AND LENGTH make a big difference.  We tried two different length of the same cable, (I think it was a 5-7ft difference) and the difference in the amp draw was quite surprising!

I am heating the garage now.  Should have some info for you soon.

I had no idea that this many people would be into this!

Nice, I'd really like to build one as well.  I need something that I can air up 39.5" Iroks in a decent amount of time.  Thanks for posting up Phazertwo, it's nice to have some real world input on this project rather than just reading threads on the Internet.  That's a slick coupler.  Guess it's time to figure out some gear reduction for the motor to help out with the amperage pull.

Ran across these pics. This is pretty much what I'm trying to do.

Also, Thanks Volcom for the R&D. Let us know what you come up with.
