E-Locker Questions
« on: Oct 26, 2009, 05:45:16 AM »
I found a complete rearend out of a 2001 Tacoma with an E-Locker for $250.  Only thing is it needs a pinion gear and I am sure some it'll need some bearings and a pinion seal.  Now my question is could I just use a set of 4.10s from my 87 Truck to rebuild this or would I have to buy a r&p for a 2001 Tacoma.  Also instead of modifying an IFS housing could I just put the complete rear out of the 01 Taco in?  I know it'll require some welding/cutting and I am prepared for that and I know it is about 1.5" wider than an IFS housing.  If I use just the 3rd member and modify my IFS housing aren't the spline counts different from an 01 and an 87?  Thanks guys I'll start a build thread once I get rolling on this.

you can use any v6 gears,  i used my 4 cyl (79 truck) gears but i had to use a custom spacer.

i would modify the ifs housing i think the 87 housing is a stronger axle housing than the tacoma's were.

Is $250 a reasonable price for one that "just needs a pinion".  I think it'd be a good idea to pull the axles and take a look at the carrier and gears don't you guys?

If it needs a pinion it also needs a ring gear. They are a matched set, you will also need an install kit to complete the deal.

yes thats a good price,  exactly what i paid for mine with the exact problem

:werd:   you want a matching set, so if you get a pinion, get the ring that goes with it

And Marlin sells the bearing kit for e-lockers too - they get them from Randy's Ring and Pinion if I'm not mistaken, but are a little cheaper through Marlin.  Also, if you get a R&P set that is a Yukon brand, make sure you take off the coating on the backside of the ring gear before you try to install it or it won't sit on the carrier mounting surface flush.  The guy that did my gears had a hard time figuring that one out.  You also might want to get the small solid pinion spacer too....Just my  :twocents:

Did you see this thread on pirate?

This is something to consider, I don't think it is an issue on the taco rear end, as much as it is on e-lockers swapped into IFS rear housings. You can check how much spline engagement it getting by putting grease on the splines an test fitting it. The housing is extremely easy to gusset.

I'll be going with the 30 spline longs with the longer inner splines from Bobby hopefully before I grenade my side gears.
