pipe bending tips
« on: Oct 20, 2009, 09:10:34 PM »
http://www.hydraulic-equipment-manufacturers.com/gifs/hydraulic-pipe-bender.jpg with this bender i seem to have a problem with it kinking on tight bends.  Would heating the bend with an acetylene torch work or would it just make the metal too hard resulting in cracking or breaking? Ive herd capping the ends with sand packed in the pipe works too, it just seems fetched.  I sure wish i had a tubeshark ..

i tried some 1/8Th inch wall, inch n a half.  Just bent a piece of scrap around the yard.  i haven't got too much bending experience, its expensive to screw up lol.  my welding teacher doesn't really go into steamfitting  :gap:..

I've used mine quite a bit, and sofar the best bends i've gotten were when i filled the pipe with sand and capped the ends with duct tape. Sounds ghetto i know but it works  :twocents:

so just simply duct tape the ends works well? Ya i kinda assumed this bender is more so for structural steel

The 1.5" die is a bit big for clean(semi-clean) bends, 1-5/8 tube works much better in the 1.5" die, same is true for all of the other dies.  If you want to you could mill the 1.25" die to fit 1.5" tube, if you don't want to pay more for 1-5/8 tube.

The bender will work much better when you fill the tube w/sand/cap it off, and yes duct tape is all you need.  Just make sure to tamp the tube to get as much sand in as possible, then let the tube sit in the sun, or heat the tube w/a torch.

1-5/8 O.D.? wouldnt that be kinda small i was thinkin some two inch.  My dad was tellin me its a PIPE bender measured by I.D., and you gotta find the pipe wall thickness to fit rite, he also was tellig me that you may be able to heat the bend up when your bending it basically suggesting sand isnt necessary?(ya'll got experiance so correct me if im off!)
i was probbly just gunna go with piping because its cheaper, prolly get some from a local scrap yard?

Depends on what you are building.  Most exo-cages, tube buggies, bumpers, sliders are all built w/1.5" tube.  You can go w/2", but you don't need to.  How you design the product has more to do w/its durability than the size/thickness of the tube.

He is also correct on the thickness of the tube.  IME the pipe bender doesn't do to well once you get below .095 thickness.  For my flatbed I used .120(1/8") wall tube.

Given the cost of tube, I went with the sand, that is how my Dad bent tube for his drag cars back in the '50's, and that is how his Dad did it in the 30's.  Sand helps to reduce the amount of deformation of the tube during the bending process when using a pipe bender.

Pipe is more malleable than tube, so you don't need sand or heat, the pipe bender will work perfectly for you.  People have built exo-cages, buggies, and bumpers from pipe, you might want to do a search here or on Pirate for the pro's and con's before going w/either pipe or tube.

You needs to learn the difference between tube and pipe
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

Thanks.
I do more of excursion type wheeling over day trips and bring about 500lbs of gear(not including parts) so I needed something that would hold all of the gear as well as still have access to tools and parts while loaded.  I guess it isn't really that much of flatbed, maybe I will start calling it a utility bed or Safari bed.
Here are a few more pics.

bahahah. that tubing doesn't even look like 1.5 looks like 1 3/4 like most cages are built from? I could be incorrect just thought... maybe since most cages are buildt with 1 3/4 and have some 1 1/2 every now and again.

It is neither, it is 1-5/8" tube.  The 1.5" tube doesn't fit the 1.5" pipe die, since the pipe is measured I/D and tube is O/D.

My whole inside cage is 1.5 Its so much easyer to work with then 1.75 at least i think...
