84 22R Hesitation/Stutter Problem
« on: Oct 10, 2009, 04:21:28 PM »
From a stop(idle), when starting in any gear even reverse, the truck at start off begins and as soon as you start accelerating into the gear and right after off the truck(smooth to this point), truck idle cuts out. Also the Battery & Brake light turn on the cluster. Not sure if its electrical or carb or vacuum lines. I cant firgure it out, all I can do it crank up the idle on the carb to help it, but very little.

Its like the the motor either has a bad ground somewhere, or its the carb not working properly at that particular point. Once you get passed the 1-2 sec cut out by apply more pedal, its smooth and runs fine at all MPH. So picture ever time you switch gears, you have to compensate more pedal to get passed the beginning of the gear to keep the motor running. If I super gentle add gas and move into the gear, it is ok, but if you give it just enough gas for a smooth gear shift, it cuts out. Give it more pedal, its smooth.

Another test I have done, is if I smash on the pedal from idle, the motor cuts for a sec that catches up. Should it be more responsive?

What could it be?

Engine starts up fine with 2 pumps to the pedal and click. Warms up Fine, Idles fine, passed smog. Replace spark plugs recently. But have only had the truck for 1 1/2 w/no records of the past. Currently has 120K on her!

Thanks.

Carb is def. leaking something. There is oily residue on the top ring, and some kind of fuel leak somewhere. I need to make up my mind if I am going to rebuild the carb, or cut out lots of vacuum lines and go with a 32/36 weber! Just waiting for $$$ to roll in.

oil residue is blowby,  it just shows the engine has alot of miles, it sounds like the fuel cut solenoid is maybe loose in the carb, i think it would cause a gas smell also,   its a small cylinder shaped thing about like a 20 guage shotgun shell with two wires on it on the passenger side of the carb

check that it has 12 volt power when the engine is running, check that its ground is grounded

Will get a tester soon at radio shack and find out, test it while the truck is running?
