97 Toyota t100 Idle problem
« on: Oct 03, 2009, 08:58:26 AM »
Here is my problem, when i start the car in cold start, starts rite up no problem. But when i drive for a while and the engine worms up, if i stop the car and shut it off. When i come back to start it it won't start, it idles really low and it shakes then dies. But if i start it and give it some gas the engine starts rite up and u can drive it again easly. But this only does it sometimes one in a while. i have know clue, i know that the motor is not loosing compression, because when it starts up it idles like a normal car.            thank you any help is appreciated

Have you tried cleaning out your mass air flow sensor?

did you clean your throttle body lately by any chance? the idea sensor is at the bottom and can get gummed up. i cleaned mine and gummed it up in my t100, had to take is apart clean it and pry it was not toast since they run $200 to $3oo+ to replace.

This sounds very familiar. My 97 T100 just started doing this. Runs fine then it has trouble starting. At the same time, it's having high idle problems.

Where is the Idle Sensor? How did you clean it?

It is under the throttle body. if you look into your T/B right before the butter fly on the bottom there is an opening that goes into the idle sensor. you will need to remove your T/B, the sensor is attached to the bottom. because the opening is on the bottom of the inside of the T/B oil and crap falls into the sensors valve witch is open and closed via coolant temp. if cold it opens and let more air in upping the rpm's, if hot it closes and lowers your rpm's. the valve gets gummed up and need to be taken off and cleaned. Be very careful when cleaning it. Mine got messed up by me cleaning my T/B and letting all the crap run into the opening.

looks like this:

Does anyone know????? could this little idle mixture valve be the cause of my 3.4 4runner having a slight miss? I have put new plugs and wires on it but every so often I get a slight but noticeable feeling of a misfire. It doesn't feel as if it is going to die but it is just enough to irritate you cause you know something isn't 100%. It also seems to take longer than I think it should to fire up sometimes. My truck has 190,000 miles on it and runs perfect other than these little gremlins that pop up from time to time.

Okay, now that I cleaned the Throttle Body, AFM, AIC and everything else invloved in there... it idles between 2000-2500rpm      .

When I cleaned the AIC I took it completly apart because it was so gummed up. Everything moved freely, it was clean as a whistle and so I reassembled everything as it was. It then idles high. So, I took it all apart again and checked it all, put it back together and nothing changed. So, took it apart againg and messed with some of the adjustments and put it back together. Idles closer to 2000. If I unplug the AIC it drops to 1500.

The barrel valve in the AIC, when taken out, is not fully closed. Is this the problem? I assume this is the factory set idle.

On the plus, there is a lot more power in the engine now.

HELP ASAP!

What do you mean by re-set it?

adjusted the valve so it was not open as much. if i remember right it is a brass coil spring that expands and contracts with the temp of the coolant. as the crap builds up on the valve i work the spring more. the spring needs to be "reset". that is done by over tightening the spring. over tighten it a little at a time. I also have 10k in it since i cleaned mine and it has not gummed up or had any problems.
