Underhood Paint?
« on: Nov 03, 2004, 07:43:46 AM »
Ok guys just a little question here what type of paint do I use to paint the bottom side of my hood?  The paint that was on there started to chip and break away so Im just wondering what type of paint I can use. Thanks a bunch :beerchug:

Pretty much any rattle can paint will work, it's the prep that you do before that will make the most differance. You've got to get it really clean and free of any oil and residue. Using a dregreaser won't do it all either. It may leave its own residue. Degrease it, then wipe it down with paint thinner, or use a cleaner that is made for pre painting. Then you still have to sand it a bit to make sure the new paint will adhere.
It gets pretty warm under there, but most paints should hold up to that, but if you were worried you could use a high heat paint.
3 hours of prep, 3 minutes of painting.

FB is :blah: like he is a paint professional (hey Im not dening it!) but Swamper, All I did was just rattle bombed my hood after cleaning it with solvent and then whipping it all down with a clean/dry rag.

But of course this is the simple method that may not even last  while FB is telling ya what you should do if you want it to look better than mine, last longer, and withstand more heat.

This is just simple black engine enamel:

I used "Under hood Black" from the Eastwood Co. on my GMC that I'm restoring. You can either buy it in quarts and mix it and use a paint gun or it also comes in rattle cans, I mixed and sprayed my parts and they turned out really nice with a nice satin finish.

rattle canning it is what I did.  If you wanna get it really clean, spray carb cleaner on it, light it on fire.  Then just wipe of the soot that is left behind.   It seemed to clean pretty well, and it is a WHOLE LOT OF FUN!!! :flamer:

in my experience, paint is paint. especially when you are at the cheap level.  When I was in high school autoshop, we just used walmart rattlecan on the engines.  Actually got one to run, and put it in a beater.  Beater ran fine until the battery exploded.(funny story).  After everything, paint looked fine.  We are talking about two years or so.
