R151 tranny help PLEASE...
« on: Sep 09, 2009, 07:34:34 PM »
Ok the auto tranny in my 1987 turbo 4cyl 4runner is the issue. The tranny finally crapped out on me today on the ride home... I have found a turbo 5speed that I am going to buy to replace the auto. However the tranny and transfer case is about 2 hours away from my house so I dont want to waste my time. These are my questions if anyone on here could help me that would be GREAT. First off how do I tell if this is really an R151 turbo 5speed and NOT just a regular 4cyl 5speed? Are there any marks (writing or numbers) to look for on the tranny or transfer case??? Thats the most important question. Also is there any issues with the ecu going from an auto to a 5speed or anything I should look out for?  I'm paying $1000.00 for both and really do NOT want to get ripped off. Thanks in advance SOOOOO MUCH :yesnod:

the transmission should have a inspection hole on the bottom of the bell housing and look for 23 splines  output
and 23 splines on the t case

Do you happen to have any pics of the inspection hole that I should be looking for? So the R151 will have 23 splines on the shaft that goes from the tranny into the engine? Will I have to split the tranny and transfer to see if there are 23 splines on the transfer case? Sorry for all the questions

Allpro used to have a pic on their site under how to I.D. a turbo tranny but I could not get the link to work.  It should have a black round plug on the bottom and I am sure some where on it it should say 151.

I'm surprised we don't have a pic of a Turbo bellhousing on our website.

I will have to dig deep into the archives to see if I have one.

Here is a side shot

And here is the genuine Toyota plug-

Yes, you will have to split the T-case Trans the 23 Spline is the output on the trans and the input on the t-case.
