coil front suspension?
« on: Nov 01, 2004, 07:02:34 PM »
for the front suspension on my truck sometime in the future, i'd love to do a coil setup with some kind of radius arms.  after doing some looking and asking on pirate, i've become interested in it.  i've attached a crude drawing of what i've been thinking about.  the arms have threaded sections on the upper and lower so it'd be adjustable(axle location, pinion rotation).  the lower link would be attached directly below where the spring would go, and the uppers would be attached to a truss at about the height of the pumpkin, and in farther to give more room for the spring(rather than just running the links vertically parallel).

on the drawing, the blue tabs are the link mounts on the axle from behind(double shear), red is the truss and you can probably get the rest.

also, as for spring mounting, i figure it would be better to put them along side the frame but it looks like i'd need sort of a narrow coil to do it.  i could do them below the frame, but at stock height my truck only has about 2" of room under there :ack:.

i've heard that a landcruiser bundera has the same width axle as a mini truck and coil springs.  anybody have pictures of how the coils are mounted?

i'm new to this so bear with me, i'd love to run coils but i can't seem to find much on running non coilover setups on a stock toy axle

Sounds like a good idea.  go with it and see how it turns out. There is a guy on Pirate called Wolverine that runs coils in the front.  You might want to pm him about it.

oh and i did some more research and it seems the setup i've been looking into is almost exactly like one of those jeep long arm setups.  seems fairly easy to build too

my only real concern is that is there much calculating involved other than good old common sense?  i see those 4 link calculators and i get totally lost :conf:

Yes they are leaves I think that coil setups are great but leaves are much easier to replace and less technical. Like I said in the first post i would look at the rubicon express kit. we also build 3 and 4 link systems for truck. if you look at our website there are a bunch of truck we have done.

I know its a samurai, but it has a coil front and rears suspension.  It also has links very similar to what you are looking to make.
