Ok,
Forgive me for this one but I'm unable to locate it (the starter). We drove thru a stream two weeks ago water over the hood and it finally died yesterday so I'm going to replace it if I can find it.
Thanks

Wow who'da thunk... it's under the throttle body cover/intake manifold assembly. Here's the directions (excuse the caps) :

Disconnect the starter from the cylinder block.
Disconnect the starter connector.
Remove the nut, bolt and disconnect the starter wire.
Remove the bolt, and disconnect the engine wire protector from the starter.
Remove the starter.

INSTALLATION
INSTALL STARTER
Install the engine wire protector to the starter with the bolt. Torque: 9.81 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 84 in..lbf)
Connect the starter wire with the nut. Torque: 9.81 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 84 in..lbf)
Connect the starter connector.
Connect the starter to the cylinder block.
Connect the engine wire with the bolt.
Install the starter with the 2 bolts. Torque: 39 N.m (400 kgf.cm, 29 ft.lbf)

I was thinking of getting a new Tundra for my daily driver since I liked my wifes Seqouia untill this. I have always changed the oil plugs general repairs but these new machines to fix something it's a pain in the #%*. I think I will stick with my 1980 Hi-Lux for the rest of my or it's (The Hi-Lux) life. Under the intake manifold or under the exhaust manifold pick your poisen lol. Automakers have achieved us totally having to almost be at there mercy, buy new one or take it to the dealer sad times.

I work at a dealer and it aint easy for us. by the time we learn the tricks they change everything. If you think thats bad the new v6's in the cars and small suv's they want you to pull the engine to do a water pump.

I got the starter back in new gaskets for the intake manifold. I also cleaned out the runners they had 178,000 miles worth of gunk build up. Started right up to my suprise this is the for me the biggest repair on a modern engine I have ever done. I also found some vaccum lines they had not been hooked up. Changed the plugs air cleaner. Should I change after all that gunk the EGR and PCV valve? The injectors looked clean how would you know if they are dirty or in need of replacement?

Pcv valve and gromment wouldn't hurt to replace. That engine does not have a e.g.r. valve it uses camgears to do that function. injectors bout the only way to tell 100% is to do a flow test on them. but i've only like 2 injectors give problems

His engine is too old to have variable cam gears (VVTi) - that came out in 2005 for the tundras and sequoias.  Toyota just made them burn clean enough to not need EGR.

BTW, make sure you replace the grommets and O-rings on those injectors if you have pulled them loose from the fuel rail.  I've seen many leak when you re-use the old ones.  Believe me, you don't want fuel spraying around in there, especially since that starter sits down in that valley under the intake.  If any gas/carb clean or brake clean fumes are down there, you will get a big flash fire when you start it.  I've seen a guy burn his eybrows off and singe his hair while leaning over one of these while someone else started it.  It was definately funny, but to scary to want to repeat.

Caddy NorthStar engines have the starter in the lifter valley (DOHC so no actual lifters/push rods) and that's all kinds of fun to replace.  :stopit:
