leaking pinion
« on: Oct 30, 2004, 08:52:44 AM »
pinion is leaking at the flange, is this an easy fix or do I have to take the 3rd member out and remove the whole mess?

easy as pie. pull the flange off and get the pinion seal out. i recommend draing the oil first so when u pry out the seal so u dont get oil all over u. i think some people put rtv on the seal but i didnt and it dont leak

Hey!!!!!!!!! Very very important! Make sure you take some medium sand paper, like a 500 or 550, and roughen up the surface on the flange where the seal seats. If you do not do this, then, because your flange has been polished to a super fine surface by the last seal, the new seal will not have anything to break it in with and it will leak within days. Seriously. You have to give a simi-rough surface on the sealing surface or else the new seal will not seat properly.

Also, another very important thing, make sure you add grease to the seal in its groove that touches the sealing surface on the flange. This way it won't burn up during the seating process.

These steps are critical to getting a new seal to actually seal!

you may need to use an impact to get the pinion nut off, it can be tight.  Seals only cost a couple bucks at the toyota dealership.

you'll also need a 30mm to take the nut off and it tourques to 91 ft lbs.
87 runner, 4" trailmaster lift, 33" TSL/SX, 5.29's V6 e-locker, 22re that cost too much

Make sure you re-notch the pinion nut to the notch on the pinion shaft so that it doesnt come loose.

i must be lucky. i didnt do either of those and it hasnt leaked yet. that was 3 months ago :hammer:
