'91 Toy Xtra cab Eliminating the carrier bearing?
« on: Aug 20, 2009, 03:33:16 PM »
Has anyone got rid of the two-piece rear driveshaft in favor of just "one" longer driveshaft? PO welded the CV portion, of the rearmost driveshaft. Guess he twisted the ears up on the cv joints or something.

What would swap into place with little if any modification?

TIA.

Get rid of the carrier portion.. run one long shaft with a cv joint at the t-case side to help with vibration and articulation...

You can run a single tube and it will work fine. The only problem is they are long and easy to bend. I bent three of them before I went back to a two-piece and a custom mount for a pillow-block bearing. Since I took these pictures I have put a clearenced CV, which has about 40 degrees of angle and reset my DL angle so the pinion is pointing at the T-case flange.

Seems to work just fine on DTB's 93 xtra cab.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

I got rid of mine when I went with dual t-cases and I have had no problems with it.  I have had to get it re-tubed once because of a massive dent in it that made awful vibrations on the road.  When I re-tubed it 8 years ago I used a thicker wall tubing.  It is about due to be re-tubed again though.

Thanks all for all the replies. I like the idea of running dual cases with a shorter shaft. :drooling:
