Ok well i just got my first paycheck  and now imma go buy me a new damn filter, my MPG is like 10 i think :-\\ anyways, i was wondering what i should get, a K&N replacement, a K&N cone with the adapter so i can take my black box out, or a TRD cone?? i wont be getting the heat shield till later, so its still gonna suck hott air in with the cones. Should i go replacement filter for now? I just need the best results

Thanx

yeah yeah TRD :blah: :blah: K&N :blah: :blah: For the difference in power, your money is much better spent on a cheap cone filter, if there is a power difference at all I have no idea, but I really doubt it. DONT! use a replacement filter. No matter how good it is it's still in an enclosed box. Go with an open element filter, like a cone. The FIPK kits are good mainly because of the intake tube, not the filter. For our engines, a $50 K&N isnt going to out flow a good $15 china cone filter, especially when our redlines are well below 7,000, we are not even boosting, yadda yadda yadda. The money saved can buy ya some new plugs or plug wires or dissy cap, or start saving for a header.

Two or three K&N filters is the equilivent of a new header. Man that sounds really bad
I just checked on ebay for headers........

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7929586862 New Hedman for $159
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7930485256 Used Hedman for $51 (3 days left)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7930043176 Pacesetter for $162
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7931076922 another Pacesetter for $189

Despite the design of the header, even the worst one will be better than the stock cast manifold (you would think)...

But you are only making 10 MPH :shocking: Is your truck Carburated? If it's EFI I think you've got an ignition problem, like really waster plugs...

One more thing, If you want to know what it feels like to have a nice filter, just remove your filter from your box and drive it around for a while.

That's right, drive around with out an air filter. What ever filter you do upgrade to, no matter how good it is, it cant beat the efficiency of no filter.
(someone's gonna get in here and say how air filters create a velocity tunnel or some other market hype that improve the flow rate. yeah, ....rrrrrrrrright.)

Just try this for 1 or 2 days. Seriously, I've driven my MR2 this entire year with 4 side draft throttle bodies with velocity stacks (air ram tubes) with out any filters and I've not had any problems.

So one or two days isnt gonna kill ya if you stay out of the dirt like I have with a MR2. Yeah, just pretent that your in a car and your be fine

hum....might try that filter trick for a day....and yes 10mpg is beliveable I get around 14 never really made the math but its around that (and remember I have one dead cyl.) what I have found to help are those octane boosters I bought one at wally mart from the NOS/Holley company I noticed a significant amount of MPG gain I usually get 50 miles per 1/4 of tank but the time I added that NOS thing I got....uhm...54 or so...the booster only cost me like 4-5bucks so it pretty much pays for itself and at the same time it cleans your fuel system

We realy need to know if it carbed or EFI. eather way 10 mpg SUCKS! have you changed your O2 sencer?
your A/F would have to be PLUGGED to make it that bad.  :crossed:  :twocents:

O2 sencer should be changed every 50-60K miles.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

SWAMPER

FireImps truck is EFI hey proly needs to change his 02's so do I but I have put this off for the reason that I may get a new exhaust... :dunno: just an excuse

brainlessfool

Well if it's EFI then I'd start looking at the O2 and then the injectors. taking the A/F off for a day is a good Idea. but no off roading for sure!. tune-up stuff . with MPG that bad it's likely some simple stuff. and maybe more than just one thing.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

SWAMPER

Yeah FIre this is what I would do

NGK plugs and wires
New A/F
Cap&rotor
and O2 sencors....that should do the trick

what i've been hearing lately is that the stock manifold is better for a daily driver than a header.  engnbldr says to save that for a race truck :psss:

Fireimp141

I got the filter for $25 and its a max air filter, or some  :bull crap: , but its nice, it not only has the side filters, but at the top where the metal usually is, it indents tehre and theres filter there too, lots of air  just gotta make some brackets so that its not just hanging there

forget about the heat shield and move the filter to the cool side of the engine!

swap places with the battery, then the engine doesn't have to suck the air so far!

I've been very happy with the setup on my truck.  btw 20mpg with 35s and stock gears

i also have an lc engineering header and 2 1/4 exhaust

I love the power and tourqe my header gave me. A good header w/ a good free flowing FULL exhast helps these trucks out tremendusly, they do need backpressure or they run like kaka, a turbo muffler w/ a full  custom 2 1/4 system is what im runnin now, jus my  :twocents:

Or you can take a ride to lowes, home depot, ect. and pick up a 3$ PVC closet flange, drill a 4 holes, trim it and paint it, jus bring the air filter your gonna use w/ you and match it up to the closet flange that fits it best

Yah i wish i had enough money to go out and get me a exaust system :nope: Need a good $400 :twocents: Never thought of the PVC thing, smart move, adapter cost me $15 :-\\ and i will think about that battery swap... do i just have to run new ground and power cables that are long enough? and what about the intake hose? some pvc :pokinit: or what? a full writeup would be nice  j/k but any help is thanx

Thanks

Hey Fireimp,

I just thought about something..

Before I start adding on modifications like exhaust, different intake, aftermarket ignition components, etc. I would first try to get my fuel mileage back to normal by replacing stock components, like O2 sensor, try some different stock plug wires, change your spark plugs, try a different air box, check my ignition timing and make sure everything is set to stock specs this way you can find out what the problem is with your 10 mpg before you start doing any modifications. Otherwise you might not be able to tell what is causing what to loose your mileage. Also, you might start changing stuff and then your mileage might get worse, and then you wont know what is causing that and then you would put everything back to stock trying to eliminate things, and ohhh boy.... :ack:

Hey what about your cat? Is it pluged up? This could cause some horriblely high back pressure and kill your power at mid range and higher rpms...........but on the same token it would also cook your exhaust valves. But I've seen pluged cats and the valves were still fine. If you catch it in time I guess its ok. Might wanna check that out sometime.. Just pull your cat off and look throught the front side of it for excess debri or if your engine is running extremely rich its also possible for the catalyst comb to have melted and that can plug it up too..

Good luck man
