ok so im working on my duals and everything is rolling along smooth. im wondering if my hobart 140 is hot enough to weld in my x-member mont. its 3/16 steel that is getting welded to the side of the frame. im a pretty good welder and have buddys that are even better. will a single pass be enough of should i go over it more than once? any advise helps  :beerchug:

Yes do a multipass weld. 3 would be best but use stringer beads not a weave
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

Yes, 3/16 isn't all that thick.  I think single pass will burn it fine.  I would be more concerned with using that thin of metal on a cross member.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

its what came with the kit. its frontrage offroad. what do you mean by stringer beads?

When you need a stronger weld, you increase the size of the weld. The best way to do that is by making more then one pass. In a t joint, or fillet weld you first weld both pieces together. Then you make a pass that is halfway on the first weld bead and the lower piece( basemetal)  Now the third you would weld halfway on the second bead and the upper base metal.

oh ok i know what your talking about. thanks man

Are you talking about the little pieces of angle iron that they supply for mounts????  If so then one pass will be plenty.  Especially since its a lap weld.  I did them on mine with my 180 and it wasnt even turned up all the way.

Grunt

If it is a lap joint, the parts have to overlap 5 times the thickness of the metal being welded. If not the joint will come out of shear and crack at the root of the weld. At 3/16 thick, one good sound bead will be enough.
With your shield or on it

zippo

If you really need to weld it and are worried about not having enough weld, preheat it with a torch. one weld should be enough. 5 cold welds it just that, 5 cold crappy welds.
If you see it, its for sale.

I've done these welds he's talking about......he will have no problem.  Its 3/16" to the side of the frame rail.  Which is less than 1/8" right???

1/8 is thinner then 3/16
1/8=2/16

Ya.....He's lap welding a piece of 3/16 on to the side of the frame rail, which is thinner.
Anyways, halladay, go for it.  One pass at full power will work just fine!
