Front bumper mounts
« on: Jun 21, 2009, 09:56:36 AM »
I am getting ready to build a front winch bumper and am trying to figure out a good way to mount it. I'll use the holes on the front of the crossmember but want to have some bolts in shear as well. Any pics of a stout simple setup would be great.
I'm doing a minimal plate bumper.

here is a closer shot of just the plate. bolting is a pain, I just weld everything

That's super stout and clean, but I want mine to be removable. Bolting is a pain so that's why I'm looking for a way to do it cause I haven't come up with a good one. Interesting dilemma.
Thanks for the pics

Was it just the 4 bolts on the front?
I'm a bit worried about relying on all the bolts being in tension (pulling on the heads) and not having any in shear (pulling the bolts sideways) when winching, especially when the winch is going to be up above the mounting bolts. Maybe I'm paranoid.

Well my bumper does have fenderbars tied into it, so thats helps.

There are also almost an inch of threads and grade 8 bolts, it has taken some hard tugs and never even thought of budging.  You can also look around for a pic of pathy88 's ( deans old truck) it has some slick mounting and is super solid.

Thanks. Couldn't find any pics of his mounting setup, but that is without a doubt my favorite 2nd gen (88_pathy).

yeah  that's what i thought about when i built my winch bumper.  and i did it almost identical as yo with the plate and bolts.   it has never  budged a bit, strong as  an ox. and i have a 9.5ti and pulled some fullsize rigs out.
                                                   no worries
i love oregon wheelin.

So here is how I ended up mounting it. I've never seen anybody use the existing holes on top of the crossmember indicated by the red arrow. Maybe it's common?

Looks good, Only thing I would suggest is welding a gusset in between the tube and the plate.  Reason being that with the plate laying horizontally like that, a hard forward impact could just bend the plate, may be something like this...

1st gen, well these are how the mounts look on the last bumper I made look. I used top of frame, front of frame, and used holes on bottom of frame and made threaded plates on bottom of bumper.

It bolts on just like the stock bumper, but I added the two lower bolts for added strength.
